In this month's edition you'll find students' thoughts on greatness in "Spotlight on Students", WICOR strategy of the month, upcoming AVID Events, and AVID supports and resources.
AVID Inspiration
Spotlight on our Students
9th Grade AVID Elective Students share their thoughts on greatness:
“Greatness means being someone beyond normal. You put more effort into things. Greatness is reaching your goals.”
“Destined to be GREAT...Greatness means meeting a goal or going above and beyond the standards.”
“Greatness means to change the world in huge ways that are good for humanity.”
“Greatness means to be proud of yourself for completing something you never thought you would.”
“Greatness means being able to be or do something with little or no mistakes. Greatness is not given in a second. It takes practice, courage, determination, hard work, and knowledge.”
Take a few minutes to watch AVID's "People Like Me". The video begins with students sharing statements about others' stereotypical views of their potential. It ends with those statements being turned upside down, showing how, through AVID, these same students have become empowered to achieve in college, career and beyond.
Telling the AVID Story
What's the news from your AVID site? What success stories can you share? Do you have videos, photos or samples of students using WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies?
We're collecting evidence like this to help spread the word and "tell the AVID story". Please bring items to share with your site team and email them to Kelly Killorn. In next month's newsletter, your picture/story/artifact may be featured in "Spotlight on Students"

Online AVID Support
This is a great pre- and post reading strategy for critical reading! Use the attached form (or create a customized form based on each text) to have your students set a purpose for reading and activate content schema before reading. Then, students come back to it to purposefully reflect on how their thoughts and feelings have changed as a result of information presented in the text.
