Spotlight on AVID
KHS AVID Seniors Meet Their E-Mentors
AVID seniors went to C.H Robinson to meet their e-mentors. Kennedy students shared their AVID experiences and explained the value of weekly tutorials. They described how engaging in the inquiry process helps them solve challenging questions. Their mentors were very impressed and suggested these problem-solving strategies are invaluable skills in the work world.
VVM AVID-Sponsored Dance
Valley View Middle School students attended the 3rd annual AVID Sponsored Dance on February 26, 2016. In addition to friends, fun, and dancing, highlights included a DJ, photo booth, and treats!
While touring the new IT building, students encountered the “COLAB room.” They were collaboratively planning and problem-solving inside! The setup with the large white boards and post-its looked just like AVID’s weekly tutorials!
KHS AVID Juniors Tour Hamline University
Kennedy AVID Juniors visited Hamline University in February. They toured the campus and heard from the admissions office about the programs, degrees, activities, events, and opportunities available at Hamline!

Elementary: Potato farm in Mars-like air, soil
In the graphic “Potato farm in Mars-like air, soil,” the International Potato Center and NASA describe the attempt to grow potatoes in a sealed greenhouse in Peru, as a way to determine whether it would be a sustainable crop on Mars.
Secondary: Immigrants need more than ‘Survival English’ to succeed
In the article “Immigrants need more than ‘Survival English’ to succeed,” Tamar Jacoby’s argument outlines why basic English is not enough for immigrants’ success, while illustrating why language proficiency is tough for immigrants to obtain.
