AVID Parent Night at Kennedy
College Day at VVE
Valley View Elementary 5th graders learn about AVID and the importance of going to college. Once each month teachers wear college gear to support the college-going environment they are creating at VVE. During the Thursday, January 22 College Day Celebration, several lucky 5th graders won college gear of their own!
Kennedy AVID students and their parents gathered to learn more about preparing for college and the amazing classes and resources Kennedy has to offer as they continue along their path.

Reciprocal Teaching
Reciprocal teaching refers to an instructional activity in which students become the teacher in small group sessions. Teachers model, then help students learn to guide group discussions using four strategies: summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and visualizing.
This Reciprocal Teaching Video, geared toward students, shows how to use reciprocal teaching to read and understand a shared text in a small group. See the attached documents below for more information/ideas.

This article compares the bald eagle and the turkey as candidates for America's official bird.
Secondary: Voices: Do Celebrities Have the Right to a Private Life?
In this article, Africa Baker and Andie Linker argue opposing views regarding the private lives of celebrities and other public figures.
All AVID Weekly articles, lesson plans and activities are archived monthly and available in the following Google Folders for anyone to access and use:
Roles:
Clarifier: Looks for new vocabulary or words that are confusing. Identifies unknown words or concepts.
Questioner: Creates Costa's Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 questions from the passage/text. Asks questions about words or concepts that are unclear.
Summarizer: Creates a brief summary of the main ideas and concepts. Provides the main idea from the reading.
Visualizer: Draws the main idea with strong visual cues and images. Connects the main idea to a shared or common visual.
Additional/Optional Roles:
Predictor: Makes predictions about the next section of the text or topic. Justifies predictions from facts. Checks predictions at the end of the text.
Note-gatherer: Records the group discussion in words, phrases, and/or visuals. Each member receives a copy of the record following the discussion for future studying and review.

A time sensitive support and collaboration forum for AVID Elective Teachers and Site Coordinators, providing an opportunity to collaborate with other coordinators and teachers from all over the country about issues and topics affecting their students and classes right now.
