AVID by the Numbers
Spotlight on AVID
Congratulations to our AVID Scholarship Winners!
The following seniors have earned one or more scholarships to help with college expenses:
KHS AVID Juniors Visit The Nerdery and Normandale Community College
IM 4th Graders Visit the State Capitol
Indian Mounds 4th graders got to tour the Capitol recently. At the end of the tour, they had a chance to meet Melissa Wiklund, former Bloomington Public School Board member and current Minnesota senator representing District 50.
KHS AVID Leadership Team Attends AVID Site Summit at MNSU
The Kennedy AVID Leadership team attended a site summit hosted by Minnesota State University-Mankato recently. AVID students from around the state gathered to experience a college lecture (and take Cornell Notes!), participate in team-building exercises, and learn the educational pathway journeys of several current college students through informal small group discussions.
VVM 8th Grade Goals Presentations
Eighth graders at Valley View Middle School presented their short-, mid-, and long-range goals to their families and BPS staff at the 4th annual AVID Goals Presentations. Students have been working on SMART goals over the course of the school year. Each student developed goals for the trimester, an academic and a social goal for high school, and a goal focused on being prepared and eligible for the college of their choice.
KHS Seniors Visit eMentors
Through the BestPrep eMentors program, AVID seniors at Kennedy High School interact with professionals via weekly emails based on a series of guiding questions. They cover topics such as business, workplace skills, economics, math, financial literacy, and science to help students understand the relationship between classroom learning and future careers. The culminating experience is a field trip to the eMentor’s business (this year it was Schwan’s in Bloomington) so students can meet their eMentor in person and see where they work.
VVE Grit Town
Fourth graders at Valley View Elementary participated in a Grit Town project where they applied and interviewed for jobs and ran their own business. Students collaborated in their groups to create, market, and sell slime, fortune tellers, and face painting. Once the shops at Grit Town closed, students wrote an explanatory essay on their experiences in business.
VVM Signing Ceremony
Students who will be joining or continuing in AVID during the upcoming school year signed their new AVID contracts recently. Families were invited to watch the signing ceremony and enjoy breakfast with the students. Incoming freshmen received Kennedy High School AVID t-shirts as a welcome to their new school!
