Spotlight on Bloomington AVID
IM Students Take 2-Column Notes
Two- and three-column notes are the precursor to taking Cornell Notes. Students in AVID Elementary programs can use these note-taking formats with any content area! Indian Mounds 5th graders took 2-column notes over a piece of text as they worked to determine the relationship between Jackie Robinson and the Civil Rights Movement.
AVID Scholars
Recently, AVID students at Kennedy High School who earned all A’s and B’s on their report cards during Trimester 1, Trimester 2, or both attended a celebration. Approximately half of KHS AVID students were honored for this great achievement!
(NOTE: Some students not are not pictured because they were busy retaking tests to keep earning those high grades!)
KHS AVID Student Awarded MCTC Scholarship
AVID junior Emily Sanchez won a $1500 scholarship from ECMC's The College Place on the MCTC Campus. Please congratulate her if you see her!
IM 4th Graders Visit the Capitol
Fourth graders from Indian Mounds toured the Minnesota Capitol Building. During the trip they learned about the Capitol’s history and art, as well as had opportunities to see the chambers where decisions are made and the the Quadriga (golden horses) on the roof.
IM 5th Graders Take 2-Column Notes
Fifth graders at Indian Mounds were recently learning about theme. They listened to the contemporary version of We are the World and took 2-column notes in their AVID binders about the importance of the song, specific lyrics that were powerful, and determined the overall theme of the song.
VVM and OGMS 8th Graders Visit KHS
Current 8th graders from both Valley View Middle and Oak Grove Middle Schools who have been accepted into Kennedy High School’s AVID Program visited their new high school. OGMS students shadowed a member of the leadership team, similar to what VVM did earlier in the year. Students from VVM, OGMS, and KHS came together for lunch and team-building activities, including the AVID strategies of The Name Game and Fishbowl Speeches. All incoming freshmen received either an AVID tote or an AVID t-shirt.
VVM AVID Students Visit Best Buy
Valley View Middle School students have been building a relationship with Best Buy. Earlier this spring, members of Best Buy’s corporate team came to Valley View Middle to share their stories. In turn, Valley View Middle students were invited to tour Best Buy Headquarters, learn about the different programs offered to teens in the Twin Cities, create a human circuit, and hear from a variety of Best Buy employees.
KHS AVID Students to FMSC
All Kennedy High School AVID students went to Feed My Starving Children as part of a community service component of AVID. Students were enthusiastic, engaged, and energized as they packed food for children in need around the world.
KHS AVID Leadership Team to VVE
The Kennedy AVID Leadership Team visited Valley View Elementary school to speak to the 4th-5th graders about AVID and assemble the Cheetah binders for all students for next year. Valley View is one of Bloomington’s AVID elementary schools and uses these binders for all students to teach organizational skills. The high school students reported that it feels good to give back to the community.
VVM 8th Grade Goals Presentations
Eighth grade AVID students at Valley View Middle School shared their short-, mid-, and long-range goals at the 4th annual AVID Goals Presentation Celebration. Families, teachers, administration, and staff from around the district came to listen as the students shared information about themselves, their experiences in AVID, their goals, and their aspirations.
VVM AVID Signing Ceremony
Students who will be entering the AVID Elective at Valley View Middle School in 7th and 8th grades, and students from Valley View Middle entering AVID as freshmen at Kennedy celebrated their acceptance into the program by inviting teachers and family members to watch them sign their AVID contracts.

AVID Professional Learning Modules*
AVID Professional Learning Modules are 90-minute sessions which focus on one aspect of AVID K–12 implementation. They can each be used on their own for a short professional learning opportunity, or they can be assembled together to create a full day or multi-day professional learning event. The goal of these modules is to support AVID program staff and District Directors in implementing the AVID College Readiness System with fidelity and depth.
