Spotlight on Bloomington AVID
KHS to U of M
Kennedy AVID 9 students toured the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis recently. The tour included one of the university’s many libraries, the Coffman Memorial Union, several classrooms, the Northrop Auditorium and mall, and even a stop by Goldy Gopher to rub his teeth for good luck!
VVM Guest Speaker
Valley View Middle AVID students welcomed Anthony Garnett, the Galaxy Youth Service Coordinator, to share his experiences as a successful student athlete. Not only does he have degrees in communication and education, he was a track superstar at both Apple Valley High School and North Dakota State University!
Mock Interviews
Kennedy AVID 11 students completed a mini unit this trimester focusing on promoting themselves for job and scholarship opportunities. Students were asked to complete a letter of recommendation form for teachers and write a letter of recommendation about themselves (in 3rd person). The unit concluding with students researching how to make be a memorable candidate in an interview and participating in a mock interview. Students were interviewed by four different adults (tutors and staff members) over a 20-minute period, and were asked 10-20 questions about their strengths, goals and plans for their future. Students were evaluated on introducing themselves (including handshakes), eye contact, voice clarity and volume, along with the quality of their responses. Interviewers then decided if they would be highly or somewhat likely to hire or award each student a scholarship. It was a great opportunity for our students to showcase themselves and the AVID program!
KHS to MNSU
Kennedy AVID 10 students traveled to Mankato recently to tour Minnesota State University-Mankato. They were able to hear information from an admissions counselor, tour the campus, and eat lunch in the dining hall!
VVE to MN History Center & Capitol
Valley View Elementary fourth graders visited the Minnesota History Center to learn about the fur trade and explore the exhibits. The highlight for many students was the tornado simulation room! Following that, they headed over to the state capitol for an interactive tour of the building.
