Spotlight on AVID

JHS Teachers Learn Two AVID Strategies

During last month’s workshop day, Jefferson High School hosted two AVID strategy breakout sessions facilitated by Cheryl Martin and Kelly Killorn-Moravec. Participants learned about the Cornell Way, a system for taking structured, rigorous notes and using them as a study tool, as well as Socratic Seminar, a discussion strategy for ensuring students engage in substantive, inquiry-based conversation around a shared text or resource.

KHS AVID Seniors Visit IM

Kennedy High School Seniors spent some time talking with Indian Mounds 4th and 5th grade students about their experiences in AVID as middle and high school students. They shared information about what AVID is and how being in the program has benefitted them on their pathway to college and career.

VVE Hosts AVID Family Night

Families of Valley View Elementary 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders were invited to AVID Family Night. Everyone enjoyed pizza and while the students and their siblings played games outside, parents/guardians learned about Bloomington’s AVID programs in elementary, middle, and high school. Special guest, 8th grader Uly, shared his experiences in AVID at Valley View Middle school, saying, “AVID is like my family.”

VVM AVID Students Teach at VVE!

Valley View Middle AVID students worked with kindergarten and first grade classes at Valley View Elementary recently. The middle school students read the Dr. Seuss classic, Oh, The Places You’ll Go to the younger students and helped them create hot air balloons stating what they want to be when they grow up.
