AVID Resources

WICOR Strategy of the Month:

10 Percent Summary and START Topic Sentence

This summarizing strategy helps students use the main or most important ideas within a text that relate to one another and write them into a shorter, coherent whole. See the attachment for a student handout of directions.

  • students determine two to four central ideas within the text and write one complete sentence describing each.
  • students use the 'S"T"Art' template to create the topic sentence:

AVID Weekly Article of the Month:

Elementary: Soccer Ball Timeline

This activity is intended to provide students an opportunity to utilize organizational and note-taking skills while learning about advancements in technology related to the evolution of the soccer ball. Students use information from a graphic, focusing on features of a timeline, and organize data into a 3-column chart.

Secondary: Are cities treading a slippery slope considering bans on sledding?

In the article “Are cities treading a slippery slope considering bans on sledding,” James Fussell argues that the true meaning behind the ban on sledding is not to protect locals from injury, but rather to protect local governments from lawsuits.

All AVID Weekly articles, lesson plans and activities are archived monthly and are available in the following Google Folders for anyone to access and use:

S = Source

T = Title

A = Author

R = Right verb

T = Topic

  • students add their previously developed central idea sentences to complete the summary.

In ________________ (Source is italicized) article ____________ ("Title" in quotes), ___________ (author's last name) ___________ (Right verb, e.g. argued, explained, discussed, proposed) __________ (Topic - in a few words describe what the article is about). Write the two to four central idea sentences in the remaining space.
