Spotlight on BPS AVID

10 Steps of the AVID Elective Tutorial

See the attached document below for more information on the tutorial process.

BEFORE the Tutorial

1. Students take Cornell notes during content classes.

2. Students complete the Tutorial Request Form (TRF).

3. Teacher/tutors check the students' TRF pre-work and Cornell notes.

DURING the Tutorial

4. Students get into tutorial groups (7 students :1 tutor)

5. The student presenter gives a 30-second speech describing his/her

pre-work.

6. Group members/tutors use inquiry to guide the student presenter in

clarifying his/her point of confusion.

7. Steps 5 and 6 are repeated for all group members.

AFTER the Tutorial

8. Students reflect on their learning.

9. Students turn in their TRFs for grading.

10. Teacher/tutors/students debrief the tutorial process.

AVID 9th graders at Kennedy High School work in their tutorial groups to identify and describe the most important aspects of each step in the tutorial process.

Elementary AVID Culture

VVE 5th Graders Take 2-Column Notes

The 5th grade classrooms and hallway at Valley View Elementary show AVID strategies and student goals for the future.

2-column notes lay the foundation for 3-column notes and eventually Cornell notes. In the left column, students record main ideas, concepts and/or questions. In the right column, students write details, facts, summaries and/or use visuals to capture important information.

AVID Resources

AVID Weekly Articles of the Month

Elementary: Threats to the Honey Bee

This article/activity is intended to provide students an opportunity to explore inquiry strategies through interaction with an informational graphic. Students move through Costa's Levels of Thinking to build knowledge and an understanding of these concepts while identifying facts, making connections to prior knowledge, and developing opinions supported by the informational text. Students expand their knowledge of threats to honeybees including insecticides, pesticides, malnutrition, and parasites.

Secondary: Getting Started: Young Americans Average on Personal Finance Knowledge

The author of this article argues that U.S. students should out-perform students of other countries in the area of financial literacy. As they read, students can circle key terms that relate to the topic of finance, and underline details that support the author's claim. In the right margin, students can summarize important details that the author uses to prove her point.

WICOR Strategy of the Month

Graffiti Silent Conversations

All AVID Weekly articles, lesson plans and activities are archived monthly and available in the following Google Folders for anyone to access and use:

Graffiti conversations are silent conversations that take place on poster paper, allowing students to engage in dialogue around key lesson concepts. They can take place during all phases of learning: activating prior knowledge, connecting students back to a key concept from the beginning of a lesson/unit, formatively assessing students' understanding, or reflecting at the end of the lesson/unit.

Several sheets of poster paper are set up around the room with different writing prompts. Silently, small groups of students respond to the prompt on one poster, using words and/or pictures, each using a different colored marker and/or post-it ntoes. After a few minutes, groups of students move to a new poster, read the previous students' responses, and respond to the new prompt. This continues until all students have had a chance to respond to all poster prompts.
