Spotlight on AVID
IM Hosts AVID Elementary Workshop
Indian Mounds hosted AVID elementary educators from around the central region of the United States for a day of collaborative learning. Workshop topics included rigor across the AVID college readiness system and collaborative study groups in the elementary school setting.
VVMS AVID Sponsored Dance
Over 250 students attended Valley View Middle School’s 4th annual AVID sponsored semi-formal dance. This year’s theme was “A Night in Hollywood” and featured a DJ, a photo booth, treats, and (of course) dancing! It was a very successful way to end VVMS’s spirit and AVID awareness week.
KHS Field Trip to Hamline
Kennedy AVID juniors recently toured Hamline University and attended an information session covering topics such as college applications, fields of study, and the college student experience.
IM 5th Graders go to Science Museum of MN
Fifth graders from Indian Mounds Elementary explored the Science Museum of Minnesota recently. They saw the IMAX film “Beautiful Planet,” and learned about dinosaur fossils, electricity, mythic creatures, the human body, sports, Minnesota, and more!
KHS Seniors to Post Consumer Brands
Kennedy High School AVID seniors toured Post Consumer Brands in Lakeville to learn about the different kinds of jobs within the company. Students heard from people in research and development, marketing, accounting, and others! They even got to tour the labs and sample cereal in all its forms from the basic, unflavored puff to the completed, boxed product.
AVID Recruitment at OGMS
Kristin Donnelly, Kennedy High School’s AVID Coordinator, and Kelly Killorn-Moravec, BPS’s K-12 AVID Coordinator, visited Oak Grove Middle School to share information about AVID with current 8th grade students as a part of the recruitment process for next school year’s freshmen class.

WICOR Strategy of the Month
How My Thinking Changed: 3-2-1
During initial learning, students occasionally arrive at misconceptions. Although these initial misconceptions are not inherently harmful, if left uncorrected, they can lead to greater educational struggles in the future. Asking students to reflect on their initial understanding and how their thinking has changed over time supports them in independently identifying their misunderstanding of material.
All AVID Weekly articles, lesson plans and activities are archived monthly and are available in the following Google Folders for anyone to access and use:
3-Ways in which my thinking about the topic changed.
2-Things or events that caused these changes in my thinking.
1-Question that I still wonder about.
AVID Support and Events
The following modules will be included in these workshops:
Online AVID Support
Daily/weekly elective class lesson plans
Informational/instructional videos, handouts and downloads covering many AVID Essentials, including Writing, Inquiry, Tutorials, Data and Site Teams.
