Spotlight on BPS AVID
This AVID student was out of breath as she excitedly described how much fun she was having dancing with her friends. Over 200 Valley View Middle School students attended the dance the evening of Friday, February 6th, and enjoyed music, treats, a raffle, and more. A good time was had by all!

AVID Weekly Subscription
AVID Weekly is a curriculum tool to help teach critical reading skills to students that have been proven to be a strong key to success in college and beyond. It uses current newspaper sources from the Los Angeles Times/Washington Post News Service to provide greater interest level for students and to broaden their critical reading skills to include various types of writing.
Ten new articles, sample lessons, and a matrix guide are available on the first of each month. All previous months’ materials from the current school year are archived and are accessible and downloadable to subscribers.
Critical Reading Strategies Addressed
• Marking The Text (including underlining claims and essential information, and circling key terms and cited authors)
• Charting The Text
• Writing In The Margins
• Summarizing Sections Of Text
A limited number of access codes are available at both VVMS and KHS (VVE should already have access codes). Please contact Cheryl Martin (KHS), Jill McDermott (VVMS) or Kelly Killorn (ESC) for more information.
Telling the AVID Story
What's the news from your AVID site? What success stories can you share? Do you have videos, photos or samples of students using WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies?
We're collecting evidence like this to help spread the word and "tell the AVID story". Please bring items to share with your site team and email them to Kelly Killorn. In next month's newsletter, your picture/story/artifact may be featured in "Spotlight on Students"

Do you know how to SLANT?
Bloomington AVID Students do! Watch this video to see VVE 5th, VVMS 7th & 8th and KHS 9th & 10th grade students modeling SLANT.
WICOR Strategy of the month:
Summarize using the "GIST"
S = Sit up
L = Lean forward/Listen
A = Ask questions
N = Note importance/Nod sincerely
T = Track the speaker
GIST (Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text) is a summarizing strategy. It can be used after any reading, video, lecture, class activity, etc. and in any content area! The students create a GIST by writing a summary limited to 20 words that precisely captures main idea(s) in one complete sentence. (Downloadable GIST Template available below.)
