Spotlight on Bloomington AVID
KHS/JHS Learn about AVID Strategies & Academic Vocabulary
During a recent professional development day, staff from Kennedy and Jefferson High Schools had the opportunity to attend a breakout session on using academic vocabulary and AVID strategies to support comprehension of content area reading. The session was interactive and had all participants up and moving and “playing” with words!
VVM to VVE to Fill Some Buckets
AVID students in 7th and 8th grades from Valley View Middle worked with Valley View Elementary students in first and second grades recently. In small groups, AVID students read the story, “Have You Filled A Bucket Today?” and facilitated as the younger students created and decorated their own buckets and wrote kind words on slips of paper to fill others’ buckets.
Community and Engagement at VVE
Fifth graders in Ms. Pignatello’s class develop a strong community and engaging classroom environment through fun activities combined with collaborative, academic learning tasks.
KHS 9th and 11th Graders to Hamline
AVID freshmen and juniors recently toured Hamline University. They learned about the different programs and financial aid Hamline has to offer, and saw many areas on campus including the library, a dormitory, classrooms, the athletic center, and creative arts spaces.
AVID Service Projects
One important component of AVID is giving back to the community.
Recently, Kennedy High School and Valley View Middle School participated in community service projects.
Project Sunshine
Kennedy High School recently connected with Project Sunshine. Project Sunshine partners with medical facilities to support pediatric patients by providing opportunities for play and creativity. Kennedy’s AVID juniors donated their time to put together 300 arts and crafts packages for teenagers affected by illness. These care packages are used at medical centers when patients face long hours of isolation when family members and professionals cannot be present.
Feed My Starving Children
Valley View Middle School AVID 7th and 8th graders recently volunteered their time at Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations.

AVID Professional Learning Modules are 90-minute sessions which focus on one aspect of AVID K–12 implementation. They can each be used on their own for a short professional learning opportunity, or they can be assembled together to create a full day or multi-day professional learning event. The goal of these modules is to support AVID program staff and District Directors in implementing the AVID College Readiness System with fidelity and depth.
