Meet 2024 AVID Senior Lessly Mejia
Lessly attended a few different schools before Kennedy High School, including Oak Grove Elementary! She has been in AVID for the last two years. Originally, she joined AVID so she could better understand her future options. “It has helped me stay focused on financial resources to help me pay for college.”
Lessly’s biggest accomplishment has been earning a high GPA throughout high school.
After graduation, Lessly plans to pursue a career in cosmetology through the Aveda Institute. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College, Dougherty Family College, Hamline University, Augsburg University, and St. Catherine University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Pedro Rendon
Pedro attended both Oak Grove Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for the last three years. “I wanted to join because my sister was in AVID and I was interested in college. AVID helped me decide on a career path and try to achieve it by finding the right college for me.”
Pedro’s biggest success in high school has been earning an Academic Letter.
After graduation, Pedro plans to earn an associate’s degree through Normandale Community College, where he has already been accepted, before transferring to a 4-year university.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Vanessa Soledad
Vanessa attended Valley View Elementary before leaving the Bloomington district for the rest of elementary and middle school. She has been in AVID for the last year. Vanessa joined AVID because she’d never heard of it and wanted to determine if it would be a good fit. “AVID has helped me set goals for the future, write in my planner, and meet new people.”
Vanessa shared that her biggest success in high school has been passing math. “I've had a difficult time in math since middle school and passing math in high school makes me proud of myself.”
After graduation, Vanessa plans to attend college. She is using this year in AVID to help her decide whether she plans to earn an associate’s degree or go to cosmetology school. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Alvaro Lopez Perez
Alvaro attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID all four years of high school! “I joined AVID to guide me through my career path while also learning and gaining everyday life skills. AVID has helped me prepare for my college/career goals when it comes to exploring different schools based on what I’m into.”
Alvaro’s biggest success in high school has been taking courses through the PSEO program.
After graduation, Alvaro plans to attend a 4-year public university to get a degree in civil engineering. So far, he has been accepted to St. Cloud State University,
Minnesota State University-Mankato, North Dakota State University, University of St. Thomas, and Concordia University-St. Paul.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Catalina Gutierrez
Catalina attended elementary and middle school outside of the United States. She joined Bloomington Public Schools as a high school student and has been in AVID for the last year. Catalina joined because she wanted to get to know more about her options after graduation. “AVID helped me improve many skills such as communicating, understanding my college and career options, and financial support options.”
Catalina’s biggest accomplishment in high school has been getting As in all of her classes.
After graduation, Catalina plans to attend college and study in the medical field. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Concordia University-St. Paul.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Christian (Chris) Atkinson
Chris attended both Valley View Middle and Oak Grove Middle Schools He has been in AVID for the last three years. “It was a place to learn how college works and has guided me in the correct direction to pursue college. When I started high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I truly believe without this class I would be lost with none of the experiences I currently have.”
Chris’s biggest success in high school has been earning a 3.4 GPA during the first trimester of his senior year.
After graduation, Chris plans to attend Hennepin Technical College, where he’s already been accepted, to pursue law enforcement.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Tiara Copher
Tiara attended Oak Grove Middle School She has been in AVID for the last three years. “I decided to join AVID because I wanted a better understanding of college and how to go about preparing for it. AVID has helped me prepare for college by allowing me to build connections around the school and also giving me opportunities to speak to younger kids about why AVID is a good choice for all students who want to know more about college and explore different careers.”
Tiara’s biggest success in high school has been challenging herself to take AP classes.
After graduation, Tiara plans to major in psychology at the University of St. Thomas, where she has already been accepted, and eventually become a therapist.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Cam Glaros
Cam attended Westwood Elementary and Oak Grove Middle School. He has been in AVID for the last year. Cam joined AVID because he attended a recruitment experience and thought it looked interesting. “AVID has helped me apply for college and scholarships.”
Cam’s biggest accomplishment has been staying on track to graduate on time.
After graduation, Cam plans to enjoy a gap year before pursuing college. So far, he has been accepted to Normandale Community College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Latasha Carter
Latasha attended Valley View Middle School. She has been in the AVID program for the last two years. “AVID helped me realize what kind of school I want to attend (private/public, in-state/out of state) and how I will pay for college (scholarships, job internships, financial aid). Another thing AVID helped me with is finding the career path I want to go down. Before entering AVID, I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school.”
Latasha’s biggest success in high school has been making it to her senior year on track for graduation. “I don’t have to worry about making up any credits or taking any extra classes. That relieved me of so much stress, and I’m able to focus on planning for my future.”
After graduation, Latasha plans to attend college. “My dream is to play college volleyball and I’m working with my coach on where that might take me. I plan on studying and majoring in psychology.” So far, she has been accepted to Concordia University-Saint Paul, Augsburg University, Iowa State University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota State University-Mankato, Concordia University-Moorhead, Carrol University, and Hamline University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Hafsa Farah
Hafsa attended elementary and middle school in Faribault before moving to Bloomington and Kennedy High School. She has been in AVID for the last three years. “I joined AVID to learn more information about college. AVID has also helped me gain more information about the career I am interested in.”
Hafsa’s biggest success has been earning a good grade in her Statway Math program.
After graduation, Hafsa plans to attend the University of St. Thomas, where she has already been accepted.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Chongxian (Sage) Liang
Sage attended elementary school outside of the country and joined Bloomington Public Schools as a middle school student at Valley View Middle School. He has been in AVID for the last year. “When I looked up what AVID was online, it was said that AVID can promote students' independence and knowledge about college and applying for college. AVID made me realize the importance of taking notes in class and submitting homework on time. At the same time, AVID also cultivated my independent thinking.”
Sage’s biggest accomplishment in high school has been his academic performance.
After graduation, Sage plans to attend college and earn a bachelor's degree. So far, he has been accepted to the University of Minnesota-Rochester, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Normandale Community College, Montana State University, and Northern Arizona University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Cyn’Nyia Wilson
Cyn’Nyia attended Valley View Middle School. She has been in AVID for the last year. She initially joined AVID as a way to help her make a smooth transition from high school to college. “I have become more aware of what I want my future to look like. Also, AVID has helped me build the skills needed to be successful.”
Cyn’Nyia’s biggest accomplishment has been maintaining a GPA higher than 3.5 throughout her entire high school career.
After graduation, Cyn’Nyia plans to earn an associate's degree before transferring to a 4-year university where she will earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology. So far, Cyn’Nyia has been accepted to Normandale Community College, the University of St. Thomas, and Hamline University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Arely Lopez
Arely attended Valley View Elementary School before leaving Bloomington Public Schools for middle school. Now that she’s at Kennedy High School, Arely has been in AVID for the last year. “I decided to join AVID because I knew it was going to be helpful for me with my college decisions. With AVID, I know all the different colleges I can apply to, and it helps me to set my goals.”
Arely’s biggest accomplishment has been passing all of her English classes.
After graduation, Arely plans to study nursing. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Augsburg University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Jared Neri
Jared attended Valley View Middle School. He’s been in AVID for the last year. “I decided to join AVID because I heard from my friends that it would offer me opportunities to learn more about colleges and scholarships. Additionally, they mentioned that it would help me succeed in my future by providing skills such as organizing and time management.”
“AVID has helped me determine whether the career I want is genuinely the one I am looking for. It has also provided information about colleges related to my needs, helping me discover who I really want to become in the future.”
Jared’s biggest success in high school has been getting to know more about himself and who he is becoming. “AVID helped me discover new aspects of myself, and I focus on the biggest success as my personal growth. I feel that this has helped me understand what I want to do in the future and learn from my mistakes.”
After graduation, Jared plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture through Dunwoody College of Technology where he’s already been accepted. In addition, Jared has been accepted to Normandale Community College, Dakota County Technical College, and Dougherty Family College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Briana Duran Gomez
Briana attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She’s been in AVID for six years! “I chose to be in AVID because I knew that I wanted to create a change within my family. I will be the first generation to attend college and want to pursue my education further than high school. AVID has helped me prepare for college by providing continuous support, career plans, and skills that I will need for education beyond high school.”
Briana’s biggest success in high school has been creating a plan of what her next steps are for higher education.
“I plan to attend Normandale Community College for my associate's degree in nursing, and then either transfer to a 4-year Minnesota state school or attend Johns Hopkins University.” So far, Briana has been accepted to Normandale Community College, Dougherty Family College, Concordia University, and Dominican University.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Jesus Sanchez Ramirez
Jesus attended Washburn Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for the last year. “I decided to join AVID because of my older brother who was in it for a long time. I've seen how much it has helped him in college and how organized he is due to the habits that he learned in AVID. It has helped me by showing me how to manage my time and stay organized.”
Jesus’s biggest success in high school has been improving his grades.
After graduation, Jesus plans to attend a 2-year college and then transfer to a 4-year college or university. So far, he has been accepted to Normandale Community College, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and Alexandria Technical and Community College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Allison N Rodriguez Vazquez
Allison attended Oak Grove Middle School. She has been in AVID for the last five years. “I decided to join AVID because I wanted to learn about the opportunities I have and what I can do to help myself find future success. AVID has helped me understand what type of college to look for and what to do during the college application process.”
Allison’s biggest success in high school has been “gaining my confidence after having a hard time feeling like I fit in.”
After graduation, Allison plans to study interior design. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Dexire (Dex) Rosas
Dexire attended LNCS Wenonah and LNCS Keewaydin prior to coming to Bloomington. She has been in AVID for the last five years. “I decided to join AVID because I will be the first in my family to attend college, so I wanted to be able to have some knowledge of what college is like. AVID has helped me by teaching me and improving my academic and communication skills.”
Dex’s biggest successes in high school have been passing all of her classes with good grades and her community involvement.
“My plan after high school is to go into interior design.” So far, Dex has been accepted to the University of Minnesota, North Dakota State University, the University of St. Thomas, Concordia University, St. Catherine University, Northern Michigan University, and Normandale Community College.

Karina attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last six years! “I decided to join AVID because I wanted to be prepared for college and have support throughout high school. AVID has helped me prepare for college by giving me time to research colleges, explore career options, and develop essential skills that will make me successful in college.”
Karina’s biggest success in high school has been her involvement in the community through joining clubs and sports.
After graduation, Karina plans to study architecture at the University of Minnesota, where she’s already been accepted. In addition, she’s been accepted to Iowa State University, Normandale Community College, Dakota County Technical College, Hennepin Technical College, and Minneapolis Community & Technical College.

Yareli attended Normandale Hills Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last five years. “I decided to join AVID because I wanted extra support in my academics. I also wanted guidance for my future plans. AVID has helped prepare me by focusing on different skills such as note-taking, collaboration, time management, and organization.”
Yareli’s biggest success in high school has been going from mostly regular classes to college-level classes.
After graduation, Yareli plans to attend a 4-year college or university. So far, she has been accepted to Augsburg University, Dougherty Family College, and Normandale Community College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Karlene Spieker
Karlene attended schools outside of Bloomington before joining Kennedy High School She has been in AVID for the last year. She joined because she recognized the unique college and career-related opportunities AVID offers. “I wanted to be prepared for what college was like and the process. Being the first generation in my family to attend college, I knew I'd be navigating the entire experience mostly alone. I wanted a support avenue to be there to guide me onto the right path and to develop the necessary skills I need to succeed. AVID has introduced me to further options for my life after school. It's helped me develop soft skills that'll make my college experience much more successful.”
Karlene’s biggest success in high school has been improving her grades. “I've been gradually becoming a better student, and feel more self-assured about my future.”
After graduation, Karlene plans to attend a two-year community college and then transfer to a four-year university to earn a bachelor's degree. “During the first two years, I plan to experiment and explore career paths to figure out what major I want to pursue, and then go for it!” So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College, Hamline University, and Dougherty Family College.
Meet 2024 AVID Senior Anahi Castaneda Rios
Anahi attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last two years. “I decided to join AVID because I wanted to learn more about myself and more about colleges. AVID has helped me prepare for college and my career goals by pushing me to do things I wouldn’t normally do if I wasn’t in AVID. I applied to colleges before November, I went to schools and checked out if I liked them, and I got pushed out of my comfort zone to help me figure out my future.”
Anahi explained, “My biggest success in high school was when I failed my whole freshman year and my GPA was really low. But I turned that around and in the following years I made sure to get As and Bs. My GPA grew higher and I even got into the National Honor Society!”
After graduation, Anahi plans to attend a 2-year college before transferring to a 4-year college or university. So far, she has been accepted to the University of St. Thomas, Dougherty Family College, Normandale Community College, and the College of St. Scholastica.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Lesly Alvarado
Lesly joined AVID her first year in Bloomington as a freshman and has been in the program all four years of high school. “I decided to join AVID because I knew I wanted to go to college and become a professional, but being a student who was born outside of the U.S. made it difficult. AVID was a way to make college possible. It was also an opportunity to prepare myself for the college experience as a first-generation student.”
AVID has helped Lesly manage her time and set priorities so that she can complete all of her tasks. “AVID has also helped me with organization both in school and outside of school and has pushed me to grow my self-advocacy.”
Lesly’s biggest success in high school has been her acceptance to 5 colleges. After graduation, she plans to attend college and major in interior design while also getting her Realtor’s license.
So far, Lesly has been accepted to Hamline University, St Catherine University, Concordia University, St Thomas University, and Augsburg University.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Alan Conteh
Alan attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. He joined AVID at Kennedy and has been part of the program for the last two years. When asked why he initially joined AVID, Alan responded, “My advisory recommended for me to join so I could figure out where to go to college and get organized.”
AVID has supported Alan at Kennedy by helping him stay organized, take notes, and become more involved in groups. His greatest accomplishments have been “earning good grades, staying on task, and accomplishing what needs to be done.”
After graduation, Alan plans to study nursing and play soccer. So far, he has been accepted to Hennepin County Technical College, Augsburg University, and Normandale Community College.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Davaughn Lane
Davaughn attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. He joined AVID as a 7th grader and has been in the program ever since! “I decided to join AVID because I knew I wanted some help with college. I wanted to be successful. AVID has helped me prepare for college because I understand the college process and figuring out what college I want to go to. In AVID I was also able to make my career goals because while growing up I never knew what I wanted to do. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want for my future.”
Davaughn’s biggest success in school was being nominated for the Triple “A” Award. “That’s my biggest success because I’m being recognized in school for the things that I do. I’m really proud of myself for just being me and I really appreciate that award so much.”
After high school, Davaughn plans to attend college to major in dance. He also plans to sing and be actively involved in the performing arts. Ultimately, Davaughn will become a choreographer.
So far, he has been accepted to Minneapolis Community & Technical College. Davaughn will be applying to American Music and Dramatic Academy in California where ideally he will attend, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and possibly Millikin University.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Keya Kittridge
Keya attended Oak Grove Middle school and joined AVID three years ago. Initially, she joined AVID to learn organization skills to feel set up for success. Throughout her years in the program, Keya feels AVID “helped me find what I'm passionate about, opened doors for new opportunities, and made me think of things I would never have expected.”
Keya says her greatest accomplishment in high school has been getting out of her comfort zone and trying new things.
After graduation, Keya plans to study elementary education and eventually become a teacher. So far, she has been accepted to St. Cloud State University and Winona State University.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Shane Jimenez Lezama
Shane attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID in 7th grade and has been in the program ever since. “Avid has helped me far more than I would have ever thought. It helped me find a couple of colleges that fit my interests and will possibly be attending in Fall, 2023. AVID helped me research more about the career I want to pursue, which is to become an architect. I have also become more organized, not just at school but at home. “
Shane’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been being the captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team.
After graduation, Shane plans to attend either the University of Minnesota or the University of Illinois, Chicago to study architecture. “After I complete my four year degree, I want to continue studying to get my master's degree in architecture and possibly start a business.” Shane has already been accepted to both the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Josue Mendoza Martinez
Josue attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. He joined AVID in 7th grade and has been in the program for six years! “I joined AVID to help me prepare for my future career in selecting the best college for me.”
Josue credits AVID for helping him recognize which schools would be the best fit for him in both academics, program options, and elective opportunities. Josue’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been leading a group in Student Voices of Unity, through which they work to change school atmosphere.
After graduation, Josue plans to attend St Cloud Technical Community College, where he has already been accepted, and study culinary arts while also playing sports.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Eliada Lawson
Eliada attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID as a 7th grader and has been in ever since! Eliada joined AVID because she knew it would help her learn more about college and provide opportunities for her future. “The program has taught me how to take well-written notes and to advocate for myself when I’m in need of help.”
Eliada’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been passing all of her classes and “finding ways to persevere in hard classes.”
After graduation, Eliada plans to attend a 4-year college or university to study education or social work. So far, she has been accepted to Augsburg University.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Wesley Nyambane
Wesley joined Bloomington Public Schools as a high school student. He has been in AVID for one year. He joined because he knew AVID would help him pursue his dream of going to college. AVID has helped Wesley develop strong organizational skills.
Wesley’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been raising his GPA.
After graduation, Wesley is looking forward to getting his driver’s license. So far, he has been accepted to the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

She joined AVID in 7th grade and has been in the program ever since! “I am going to be the first one in my family to go to college so I am new to the whole process. I was confused as to what I was going to do with my future and knew I would need help. AVID has helped prepare me for my college/career goals by making me do more research on different careers and colleges”

Lesly attended Valley View Middle School. She has been in AVID for one year, after joining in order to learn and work toward her options for after graduation. “AVID has helped me decide on what career I mostly want to do, think about college, and be able to know what colleges I want to go to.”
Lesly’s greatest success in high school has been remaining in physics and passing the class, despite it being incredibly challenging.
After graduation, Lesly plans to attend Dougherty Family College at the University of St Thomas, where she has already been accepted.

Kelvin attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. This is his second year in AVID. Initially, he joined AVID because he knew it would help him with his college journey. “AVID has helped me prepare for many exams like the ACT and helped me apply for college.”
Kelvin’s biggest success in high school has been staying involved and engaged in all of his classes.
After graduation, Kelvin plans to go to college to study business. So far, he has been accepted to Concordia University - St Paul.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Charlotte Martinez Tecomalman
Charlotte attended Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID in 7th grade and has been a part of the program for six years! “I decided to join AVID because since I'm the oldest sibling I didn't know how I would do the whole college process. Also, I didn't know how I would prepare myself for college.”
Charlotte reports AVID has helped her develop and meet her college and career goals through projects, exploring colleges and careers, and bringing in guest speakers.
“My biggest success in high school so far is doing so well when we went to virtual learning during my sophomore year.”
After graduation, Charlotte plans to go to college and major in sonography. So far, she’s been accepted to Augsburg College, Alverno College (Milwaukee), Minnesota State University-Mankato, St. Cloud Technical & Community College, and Minneapolis Community & Technical College.

Manuel attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He joined AVID in 7th grade and has been in the program ever since! Manuel initially joined AVID to learn more about college, but discovered that it also helped with “staying on task with assignments.”

Meet 2023 AVID Senior Eman Mohamed
Eman attended elementary school in another district and joined AVID in 8th grade at Valley View Middle School. She’s been in the program ever since! “I decided to join AVID because I needed an extra resource that could lead me down the right successful path. I needed a program that could help me figure out how to get through high school, which was really scary for me.”
Eman credits AVID for helping her feel prepared for college by developing good time management and organization skills.
Her biggest accomplishments in high school have been joining a new sport and falling in love with it and earning an ‘A’ in physics, “which was really hard to get!”
After graduation, Eman plans to attend a 4-year university to earn a bachelor's degree in biology. Ultimately, she plans to go to medical school. So far, she has been accepted to Augsburg University and Normandale Community College.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Margarita Vera-Martinez
Margarita attended Oak Grove Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID as a sophomore at Kennedy and has been in the program for the last three years. Initially, she joined AVID for the academic help but quickly recognized other positive supports. “I have now learned how to take notes and manage my time.”
Margarita’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been earning all A’s and B’s in her classes.
After graduation, Margarita plans to attend Normandale Community College, where she has already been accepted, to begin working on her business degree.

Vicky attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last two years after a friend recommended the program to her.

Meet 2023 AVID Senior Melissa Jimenez Alvarez
Melissa attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She joined AVID in 8th grade after several friends recommended it, and has been in the program ever since!
“AVID has helped me with completing the FAFSA, applying to colleges, and preparing for the ACT.” Melissa’s greatest accomplishments in high school have been establishing connections with teachers and maintaining good grades.
After graduation, Melissa plans to join the Air National Guard for a year before attending college. She has been accepted to the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and St. Cloud State University.

Sheldon attended schools outside of Bloomington until recently. He has been in AVID for the last year. Sheldon joined AVID because one of his teachers recommended it to him. “Someone saw my value, even when I didn't, and they made sure I joined AVID. I got into good schools with great offers, thanks to Ms. Lehner and the AVID team.”
Sheldon’s greatest success in high school was completing all of his classes.
After graduation, Sheldon plans to attend Dougherty Family College at the University of St. Thomas, where he has already been accepted.

Meet 2023 AVID Senior Anadia Rose
Anadia attended Indian Mounds Elementary, Valley View Elementary, and Valley View Middle Schools. She joined AVID as an 8th grader and has been in it ever since! “I joined AVID because I wanted help in organizing my life and understanding myself more and because I wanted more help with my future, which I happily got.”
Anadia attributes her successes in preparing for her future to having an understanding and supportive AVID teacher who “helped me understand myself, helped me know my future plans in my life, and pushed me to not give up and succeed in my goals.” Her greatest success in high school has been the pride she feels in completing her goals and staying involved.
After graduation, Anadia plans to attend Anoka Ramsey Community College, where she’s already been accepted, to earn an associate’s degree and play volleyball. She then plans to transfer to Clark Atlanta University to begin her career in fashion.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Jimena Ortiz Sanchez
Jimena attended schools outside of Bloomington during elementary and middle school. She has been in AVID for one year. “I decided to join AVID to help me and provide resources for my future in terms of applying to colleges.”
Jimena credits AVID for helping her with advice and staying on track with applying for colleges and scholarships. Her biggest successes in high school have been earning a letter award for having a 3.5 (or better) GPA and having her teacher ask for permission to use her poem as an example for future students.
After graduation, Jimena plans to attend college. So far, she has been accepted to Minnesota State University - Mankato, Minnesota State University - Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, the University of Minnesota - Duluth, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Normandale Community College.

Imade attended Oak Grove Middle School. He joined AVID as a freshman at Kennedy and has been in the program all four years of high school. “I decided to join AVID because the aim of the program is college readiness and I wanted to make sure I had the necessary skills for college life. AVID has helped me prepare for my college and career goals by helping me become more organized and develop many academic skills and strategies that will help further my education.”
Imade’s greatest success in high school has been passing every Advanced Placement exam he’s taken!
After graduation, Imade plans to attend a 4-year university and major in biology. “In the end, I am aiming to get into the medical field.” So far, Imade has been accepted to the College of St. Scholastica in River Falls.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Yazmin Cruz Rodriguez
Yazmin attended Indian Mounds Elementary before moving to Richfield through middle school. Now that she’s back in Bloomington, Yazmin has been in AVID for the last year. Initially, she joined because she knew AVID would help guide and prepare her for the future. “Some things in AVID that have helped me prepare for college and my career goals are knowing the process of it all and how to be organized in the journey of applying and setting goals for what I want for myself now and in the future.”
“My biggest success in high school has been just going through it. It was not always easy for me and I think most of us could relate, but every time I’d get motivated to do something or get something done I felt so proud of myself because I know how hard it can be just to have motivation in something. I am grateful I can do that for myself. So, in short, my biggest success is developing motivation and walking forward with life.“
After graduation, Yazmin plans to attend Normandale Community College, where she’s already been accepted.
Meet 2023 AVID Senior Britney Vega-Quintanilla
Britney attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID as a 7th grader and has been in the program ever since! “I joined AVID because it has always been a dream of mine to attend college. AVID has really helped me feel more prepared for college with all the scholarship opportunities provided and all the college/career research we have done to find the perfect fit for each one of us.”
Britney’s greatest success in high school has been participating in programs like AVID and Ignite.
After graduation, Britney plans to attend Normandale Community College, where she’s already been accepted, and do some traveling. Eventually, Britney will transfer to the University of Minnesota.

Andrea attended Oak Grove Middle School. They have been in AVID at Kennedy for one year. They knew AVID would help them identify career goals, find a college that would support those goals, and support their academic skill development. When asked how AVID has helped them prepare for college and career, Andrea said, “AVID has helped me be confident in the choices I have made.”
Andrea’s biggest success in high school has been earning all A’s! After graduation, they plan to attend college. So far they have been Augsburg University and Hamline University. She will be attending Augsburg.

Ashley attended Valley View Middle School. She was in the AVID program for two years there and all four years at Kennedy High School for a total of six years in AVID! She decided to join AVID because she wanted to be prepared for high school and understand how to prepare for college. “I've been able to learn more about what colleges I should look for that involve my interested majors.”
Ashley’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been taking an honors or advanced placement level course every year. After graduation, Ashley plans to attend a 4-year university to major in pre-law or psychology. So far, she has been accepted to Augsburg University.

Mayra attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID all four years of high school. “I knew I was going to need college readiness skills and help with college related stuff because I am going to be one of the first people to go college in my family. AVID has helped me gain many organizational skills that I know will come in handy quite a bit while in college.”
Mayra’s biggest accomplishment in high school was being one of two freshmen to have her poem published in a book! After graduation, Mayra plans to attend a four-year university to major in graphic design and marketing. So far, Mayra has been accepted to St. Catherine University, University of St. Thomas, Concordia University, Augsburg University, Mount Mary University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and Hamline University.

Sharon attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in the AVID program for the last six years! Sharon decided to join AVID because she will be the first generation in her family to attend college and she knew AVID would help and support her along the pathway. “I found my career, where I want to go to school, and in general it has pushed me to complete the college process.”

Upon graduation, Sharon plans to attend a four-year university and major in engineering. Meet 2022 AVID Senior Emma-Lee Shuck
Emma-Lee attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last three years. Emma-Lee joined AVID as a way to surround herself with other people who also needed help and support with their future planning. “AVID has helped me so much with presenting to small groups and taking notes.”
Emma-Lee’s greatest accomplishments in high school have been trying new sports, trying a BCCA class, and taking algebra honors. After graduation, she plans to go to Normandale Community College or Hennepin Technical College to study juvenile justice. She will be applying to Hennepin Tech soon, and has already been accepted into Normandale Community College.

Talayah attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. They have been in AVID for the last year. Talayah joined AVID to learn about “better college opportunities and scholarships.” They feel that AVID has helped them better understand their options and opportunities. Talayah’s biggest accomplishment has been winning awards for her artwork.

Ketsali attended elementary and middle school in Richfield. She joined the AVID program this year because she had begun thinking about college and her career and knew AVID would help and support her in these areas. “AVID has prepared me for my college goals by helping me get a step further by letting me know when and what kind of scholarships I could possibly earn.”
“My biggest success in high school is once I feel like giving up I get myself back up and keep going.” After graduation, Ketsali plans to go to college. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College.

Ishwaq attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for one year. “I decided to join Avid during my senior year because I wanted them to help me with my college applications process and scholarships. One reason AVID has helped me prepare for college is my organization skills.”
Ishwaq credits AVID for helping her to break out of her shell and become less shy. “I believe now more than ever I am more comfortable with speaking out.” After graduation, Ishwaq plans to attend a four year college or university and earn a bachelor of arts degree in nursing. So far, she has been accepted to the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities), the University of Minnesota (Rochester), Augsburg University, St. Catherine University, and the University of St. Thomas.
Meet 2022 AVID Senior Eli’Sha Parker-Williams
Eli’Sha moved to Bloomington in high school but was fortunate enough to have AVID during her middle school experience in her previous district. She has been in the AVID program for 6 years! Eli’Sha joined AVID to have access to more opportunities and learn about the significance of college. “It has prepared me to understand the college application process and what to look for in a college. They have helped me find career clusters of interest, and have also helped me academically with our weekly Tutorial Request Forms.”
Eli’Sha’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been maintaining a grade point average of above 3.0. After graduation, she plans to attend a four year college or university in Minnesota and major in graphic design. So far, Eli’Sha has been accepted to the University of Minnesota, Augsburg University, and Hamline University.
Meet 2022 AVID Senior Taylor Aufdencamp
Taylor attended both Washburn and Poplar Bridge Elementary Schools as well as Oak Grove Middle School. She has been in AVID for one year. Taylor joined AVID because she knew it would help her learn more about college and get accepted to a good school. “AVID has helped me write college essays and it has helped me actually get things done instead of procrastinating. Getting ready for college is really scary but this class makes it manageable and easy.”
Taylor’s plans after graduation include moving to Florida and becoming a marine biologist. So far, she has been accepted to the University of West Florida, NOVA University, and the University of Minnesota. Her greatest accomplishment in high school was getting into NOVA!
Meet 2022 AVID Senior Aspen Copenhaver
Aspen attended school in Minneapolis’ Southside Family Charter School through middle school. They have been in AVID for one year. Initially, Aspen joined AVID after learning from their teachers that it would be good preparation and support for their college and career goals. “I've gotten more information about colleges, how to apply, scholarships I could qualify for, and things like that.”
Aspen’s greatest accomplishment has been passing their AP courses during distance learning. After graduation, they plan to attend college out of state to major in either elementary special education or social work. So far, they have been accepted to Northwestern University (Illinois).

Brian attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for six years! Brain initially joined AVID because he knew it would open his mind to the possibilities of college and career goals. “I just wanted more in my schedule, I wanted a guidance for my future, and I wanted to expand my view and understanding of what I could achieve within my high school career and for my future.”

Luis attended Normandale Hills Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. A teacher recognized his potential and recommended him for the AVID program four years ago and he’s been in it ever since. Udeme went to both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for six years! “I really want to go to college and AVID said they'd better prepare me for college so that’s the main reason I joined.” Udeme credits AVID for helping him become really good at taking notes and advocating for himself.
Udeme says his greatest accomplishment in high school has been “making friends in all my classes and maintaining communication with them even after classes ended, and getting to know my teachers a lot better by asking questions instead of being the student who never asks questions.”

Chris’s greatest accomplishment in high school has been winning a Golden Torch Award , an award given by teachers to recognize students’ outstanding attitude, effort, and academic success. Following graduation, Chris plans to attend Normandale Community College, where he has already been accepted. Eventually, he plans to transfer to a 4-year university with the goal of becoming an aerospace engineer.

Sherlin attended elementary and middle schools in Puebla, Mexico, where her family is from. This is her third year in AVID. “I heard about AVID from 3 family members who told me it would help me with college opportunities. It has helped me by looking more into my major and into the college I'm attending.”
Sherlin says her biggest success in high school has been learning to speak up more and try activities that are outside of her comfort zone. Sherlin has been accepted to attend Normandale Community College, where she plans to earn an associate’s degree before transferring to a 4-year university.

Diego’s greatest accomplishment in high school was being All-Conference for both years he was on the KHS soccer team. After graduation, Diego plans to attend a Dakota County Technical College, where he’s already been accepted.

Kevin went to Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for the last two years. Originally, Kevin joined AVID to get some help with organization and preparing for the ACT. But, through his experiences with the program, Kevin has realized “AVID has made my decision on choosing colleges clearer.” Kevin’s biggest successes in high school are being able to take the classes he is most interested in and being happy.
After graduation, Kevin plans to attend a Division III college and play soccer there. So far, Kevin has been accepted to Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Normandale Community College.

Meet 2021 AVID Senior Ricardo Vera Martinez
Ricardo attended Olson Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools before joining AVID at Kennedy as a freshman. He originally joined AVID because he wants to be successful. “I really think AVID has been a great help with difficult times inside and outside of school. AVID has helped me with learning how to make better bonds with teachers, emailing teachers, and also being a leader. AVID has been really helpful with being more organized and being able to take notes to help me study for tests/quizzes.” Ricardo is particularly proud of having all A’s during the first trimester of his senior year, thus being able to bring up his GPA.
After graduating, Ricardo plans to go to college to study business or finance. So far, he has been accepted to Augsburg University, St. Mary’s University, and St. Cloud State University.
Meet 2021 AVID Senior Madeline Lopez Vergara
Madeline attended both Poplar Bridge and Washburn Elementary Schools before Valley View Middle School. She joined AVID as a 7th grader and has been in the program for 6 years. “I chose to join AVID because I wanted to be prepared for college. Nobody else in my family had gone to college before, so it was a new experience for me, and I didn't know what to expect when I graduated.”
Madeline says AVID has made her a more organized person. “I learned how to use my planner to organize my assignments and to track my progress. It also helped me organize my confusion on homework with TRFs and tutorials. There was a lot of college and career research done that helped me narrow down my options as well.” Madeline is most proud of maintaining her grades throughout high school; never having her GPA dip below 3.7. “I also joined a few clubs because AVID encouraged me to explore my interests in high school.”
After graduation, Madeline plans to attend a 4-year university to become a high school teacher in either English or History. So far, she has been accepted to the University of Sioux Falls, University of Minnesota-Mankato, University of Minnesota-Morris, Winona State University, Normandale Community College, and St. Cloud State University.
Meet 2021 AVID Senior Nassra Mohsin
Nassra has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. She decided to join AVID so she could get help and support with the skills and strategies she needed to be successful in her other classes, as well as to prepare for college. Nassra says AVID has been a big help in completing her FAFSA. When asked about her greatest accomplishment in high school Nassra replied, “I get to graduate on time now!”
After graduation, Nassra plans to attend a local community college to complete her general education courses before transferring to a 4-year college or university. So far, she has been accepted to Augsburg University, Normandale Community College, Inver Hills Community College, and St. Cloud State University.
Meet 2021 AVID Senior Cristina Torres Eumana
Cristina went to three different elementary schools in Bloomington: Indian Mounds, Oak Grove, and Valley View. She then attended Valley View Middle School, where she joined the AVID program as an 8th grader. “I joined AVID because other students encouraged me to join! I was interested in how to take Cornell notes and be prepared for college. AVID has helped me with tools I can use to succeed academically and mentally. AVID gave me a determination to follow my goals. My goal was to be accepted to my dream four-year university. Thanks to AVID, I have accomplished that goal.”
After graduation, Cristina plans to attend her dream university and study to become an echocardiographer. So far, she has been accepted to St. Cloud Technical College, St. Catherine University, Augsburg University, and she is still waiting for a few more responses!
Meet 2021 AVID Senior Gloria Bauch
Gloria attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She has been in AVID at Kennedy High School for the last year. “I decided to join AVID because I needed help with college and career options and I also wanted to be in a class that prepared me for college and with organizational skills.” Gloria says AVID has helped her narrow down options for careers and find scholarships in a more accessible way. Her biggest success in high school is maintaining a high GPA. “I had teachers that cared and supported me in and outside the classroom.”
After graduation, Gloria plans to attend the College of Saint Benedict and major in Exercise Science. “I hope to use that degree to further my education and become a physical therapist or a chiropractor.” So far, she has been accepted to Baylor University, the University of Louisville, St. Olaf College, Gustavus Adolphus College, College of Saint Benedict, Southwest Minnesota State University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and Winona State University.

Taley attended Olson Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for the last year. Taley decided to join AVID because she knew she would acquire skills and strategies that would support her learning and success in other classes and beyond. “AVID helped me complete the FAFSA and apply for colleges.” Taley is most proud of her good grades.

When asked why she joined AVID, Ashley replied, “College is one of the things I want to accomplish in life and I heard many great things about this program and how it helps. Meet 2021 AVID Senior Geo Arpista Anzures
Geo attended both Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He joined AVID as a 7th grader and has been in the program ever since! “I wanted a better opportunity to learn. Also, be the first in my family to go to college.”
Geo credits AVID with helping him “think outside the box and try to be open to new opportunities that come.” He says AVID exposed him to new things and made him curious to learn more.
When asked about his proudest achievement in high school Geo responded, “I am part of PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Option) in high school. I get to go to Normandale Community College to have college classes, and see what secondary education is like, and receive college and high school credits.”
After graduating, Geo plans to move out to the west coast to attend college. Ao far, he has been accepted to California State University-Los Angeles, Hamline University, and Saint Paul College.
Meet 2021 AVID Senior Ally Palmquist
Ally attended Washburn Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for 3 years. “I decided to join AVID because I saw how this class helped my brother with applying to college and earning scholarships. AVID helped me find different career paths that interested me and prepared me for them in the future.”
Ally shared that her biggest accomplishment in high school was winning various art awards through the Scholastic Art program.
After graduation, Ally plans to go into the Art Transfer program at Normandale Community College to fine tune her art skills and eventually go into an art related field. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College.

Gina went to Hillcrest Elementary School and Oak Grove Middle School. She has been in AVID at Kennedy High School for two years. “I wanted to join AVID because I knew AVID helps prepare students for college. AVID helps struggling students and helps prepare them for their future so that they are no longer struggling and are on the path to success. AVID has helped me become more of an organized person and a better leader. AVID has also helped me improve upon my academics, especially with improving my GPA. Most importantly, AVID has helped me through times when I struggled throughout my high school experience. I have come a long way, starting with a low GPA. AVID makes your dreams come true.” Gina reports her biggest success in high school is raising her GPA.
After graduating, Gina plans to attend a 4-year college. So far, she has been accepted to Minnesota State University-Mankato, University Of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Minnesota-Rochester, University of Minnesota-Morris, Normandale Community College, and Augsburg University.

Alissa Attended both Valley View Elementary and Middle Schools. She joined AVID as an 8th grader and has been in the program for 6 years. She originally joined AVID because she knew it would help prepare her for high school, college, and ultimately her career. “AVID has helped me prepare for my career goals by helping me narrow down what will be successful for me in the future.”
Alissa is most proud of “not giving up on school throughout the years, even when life was hard.”

Meet 2020 AVID Senior Benjamin Vogel
Ben attended Oak Grove Middle School and has been in AVID all four years of high school. He joined AVID after learning that the program would help him become more organized and would prepare him for his college and career aspirations. “AVID walked me through the process of college applications and taught me good note taking and study habits.” When asked about his greatest successes in high school so far, Ben said, “getting involved and managing myself effectively.”
After graduation, Ben plans to attend a four year college to get a management degree with a human resources focus. So far, he has been accepted to Bemidji State University, Winona State University, Normandale Community College, and Luther College.
Meet 2020 AVID Senior Tayla Lewis
Tayla attended Westwood Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools, and has been in AVID all four years of high school. She wanted to have help throughout high school in finding the right colleges, scholarships, and the ACT. Tayla says her greatest success in high school has been passing all of her classes, especially math. “In middle school I had trouble with math somewhat, but I always asked for help. I found out that I'm really good at math, it was just a struggle for me to understand. So, in middle school they put me in a math class where I got extra help. Meet 2020 AVID Senior Mercedes Man-Chhuon
Mercedes attended Washburn and Valley View Middle Schools and has been in AVID for five years. She originally joined because she knew AVID would help her get organized. “It has helped me to take good notes which help me study and do well on the tests.” Her biggest success in high school far has been acceptance into the National Honor Society.
After graduation, Mercedes plans to attend Normandale Community College before transferring to St Cloud State University, or attending St Cloud State University for all four years of college. Meet 2020 AVID Senior Darelle Williams
Darelle has been in AVID for the last three years. He initially decided to join AVID because he knew it would be a good opportunity to prepare him for college. “AVID has helped me by motivating me to be successful, teaching me how to take notes, helping me stay organized, and keeping me positive.”
After graduation, Darelle plans to attend St Cloud Technical College, followed by St Cloud State University. So far, he has been accepted to St Cloud Technical College, Hennepin Technical College, and ITACS.
Meet 2020 AVID Senior Mula Nambwaya
Mula attended both Olson Middle and Valley View Middle Schools and has been in AVID all four years of high school. He joined AVID to gain experience and better understand the rigors of college. “AVID has helped me gain the college mindset and also taught me organization skills.” His greatest achievements in high school have been earning straight A’s during his senior year and receiving two Golden Torch Awards.
After graduation, Mula plans to attend a post-secondary school. So far, he has been accepted to Normandale Community College.
Meet 2020 AVID Senior Shavaun Jones
Shavaun has been in AVID all four years of high school. She joined AVID because she wanted to learn more about college and knew she would get the help and support she needed to be successful in school. “AVID has prepared me to be an individual and learn to work at my own pace.” Shavaun says her biggest accomplishment in high school has been having all A’s and B’s.
After graduation, Shavaun plans to attend college to eventually become a pediatric dermatologist. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Hennepin Technical College.

Paulina attended Oak Grove Elementary and Oak Grove Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for three years. Paulina decided to join AVID because she heard it would help her with classes and, more importantly, would help her become college-ready. She says AVID has helped her prepare for college by developing her responsibility in taking notes when she’s not required to and staying on top of her work. “My biggest success in high school is taking my AP classes and passing them. I found AP really hard and at times, I was determined to drop them, but I never did.”
After graduation, Paulina plans to attend college. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College, St Cloud State University, and Minnesota State University-Mankato.

Mohamed attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID all four years of high school. Mohamed joined AVID to receive the college preparation benefits, meet new people, and enjoy new experiences. “AVID taught me about scholarships and how to find the right school and how to have a good college essay.” His greatest accomplishment in high school was joining the Genesys Works program and earning a paid internship.

Meet 2020 AVID Senior Yailene Ruiz
Yailene attended Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. She has been in AVID for six years, since 7th grade! She initially decided to join AVID because she wanted to get as much help and support as possible to be prepared for college. “AVID has prepared me for college by helping me on scholarships, completing the FAFSA, and finding the right school for me.” Yailene’s biggest success in high school has been earning a 3.6 GPA during the first trimester of her senior year. “This has been the highest GPA I’ve earned, and I worked extremely hard for it.”

Abdullahi attended Valley View Middle School and has been in the AVID program all four years of high school. Meet 2019 AVID Senior Jessica Garcia-Garcia
Jessica attended school at Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle. She has been in AVID for 6 years! Jessica joined AVID when one of her middle school teachers recommended she check it out. After attending one of the information sessions, she decided AVID would be a great fit for her to improve as a student. “AVID has taught me how to take notes during a speech/lecture when there is no visual presentation. AVID has also taught me how to problem solve on my own.” Jessica says her greatest personal success is being able to keep a job while staying on top of homework.
After graduation, Jessica plans to attend a 4 year college/university and major in biochemistry with minors in Spanish and women studies. So far, Jessica has been accepted to College of Saint Benedict, St. Mary's University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Carleton College, Hamline University, Concordia College-Moorhead, St. Catherine University, College of St. Scholastica, St Olaf, University of St. Thomas, and University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Koffi has been in AVID for 6 years! He originally joined because it was recommended to him. Koffi reports that AVID has helped him become more organized and engaged in his school work. When asked about his greatest accomplishment in high school, Koffi replied, “ I would probably say the fact that I been able to balance my sports and education.”
After high school Koffi plans to play college football at a 4 year college or university and while studying computer engineering. So far, he has been accepted to Concordia University-St. Paul, Augustana University, University of Northern Iowa, and Augsburg University.

Bemnet attended school at Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle. She has been in AVID for 6 years! “I decided to join AVID in order to gain access to opportunities I felt I couldn’t find anywhere else. Growing up I always knew college was my biggest goal, I just didn’t know where to start with my questions. AVID helped me answer those questions.” Bemnet reports that AVID has helped her prepare for college and career goals by setting time aside for reflection. “Having the time to understand who I am and what I want has really has set me up for my future.”
After graduating, Bemnet plans to attend a four-year university and major in kinesiology and go into occupational therapy. Britney attended school at Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle. She has been in AVID for 6 years! Britney joined AVID because she wanted to be able to learn about getting a college education beginning at a young age. “It helped me learn that some careers I had in mind, just aren’t for me.” Britney’s greatest accomplishment has been moving outside of her comfort zone and becoming more independent. “As someone who is shy, trying new activities was a big step.”

Bathshua attended school at Washburn Elementary and Valley View Middle. She has been in AVID for 6 years! Bathshua decided to join AVID because she wanted to be successful in school and wanted to prepare for college. “AVID has helped to prepare me for college and choose my career by having to write cornell notes and having surveys about our interests in our career and what we would like in a college. AVID has also helped with college because we get to visit colleges and learn more about them.” Bathshua’s greatest success in high school has been, “growing from a student who didn't really care about [my] studies to wanting to be better and to get my grades and my GPA up.”
After graduation, Bathshua plans to attend college to become an architect after doing missionary work for a year or two. So far, she has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Hennepin Technical College.

Helen attended Oak Grove Elementary and Oak Grove Middle schools. She has been in AVID all four years of high school! Helen decided to join AVID because she realized it focused on helping students get ready for college. “As a first generation student, college was a scary thought. AVID has helped me figure out what college I would like to go to, what major is the best fit for me, supported me while writing my college essay, and helped me fill out my FAFSA.” Helen’s greatest success in high school so far has been staying on top of her studies while going through many medical issues and recoveries.
After graduation, Helen plans to attend a 4-year college and major in accounting with a minor in American Sign Language. So far, Helen has been accepted to Bemidji State University.

Juan attended school at Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle. He has been in AVID for 6 years! When asked how AVID has helped him, he responded that AVID has helped him feel prepared for college and helped him select colleges that fit his career goals. Joan reports AVID has given him “an inside view of what my career looks like.”

Meet 2019 AVID Senior Lizeth Pineda Roldan
Lizeth attended Valley View Middle school. She has been in AVID all four years of high school! “I knew I was going to need some extra help to help me academically and for my future. AVID has really challenged me to always stay determined in taking classes that are out of my comfort zone.” Lizeth attributes TRF's (tutorial request forms), taking Cornell notes, binder checks, and the other supports in AVID in helping her build habits that have led to her success in high school and will continue to support her once she goes to college. When asked about her greatest accomplishment in high school, Lizeth said, “My biggest success in high school has really been breaking those stereotypes that surround me as a Mexican-American. I have taken and challenged myself in classes that are so out of my comfort zone such as taking 4 AP classes. For me, that is a big deal and I really want to set myself as an example for others. I am proud to say that I have been able to have internships and build relationships with teachers in school that have really shaped the student I am today. Success for me is not everything I have accomplished, it’s also the many things I didn't do so well that made me who I am.”
After graduation, Lizeth plans to attend St. Mary's University and major in graphic design. She then plans to attend the University of Minnesota to earn a then get my masters degree. So far, Lizeth has been accepted to St. Mary's University, Hamline University, Augsburg University, St. Catherine University, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Hennepin County Technical College.
Meet 2019 AVID Senior Emily Sanchez Martinez
Emily has been in AVID for the last two years. She decided to join AVID because she will be the first in my family to go to college and she realized she needed help moving along that pathway. “AVID helped lead me the right way. AVID has helped me keep my grades in check and helped me apply for many scholarships. AVID has also given me many opportunities to visit colleges and give me a better idea of what college is like.” Emily’s greatest success is having good grades and being able to earn a scholarship. Emily is one of only 45 students to earn the Act 6 Scholarship. Act Six is the only urban leadership award that covers at minimum the cost of tuition, worth up to $140,000 over four years.
After graduation, Emily plans to attend Bethany Lutheran College to become a nurse. Her ultimate goal is to travel to third world countries to help as much as possible. In addition to Bethany, Emily has been accepted to Winona State University, Bethel University, Drake University, Augsburg University, College of St. Scholastica, Bemidji State University, Northwestern College, Minnesota State University-Mankato, Concordia University, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, and North Dakota State University.
Meet 2019 AVID Senior Isela Cereso Mendiola
Isela attended Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle schools. She has been in AVID for 6 years! VVE, VVM 6 years When asked why she joined AVID, Isela replied, “I wanted a program which would help me develop my leadership skills and challenge me to set high expectations for myself in order to succeed as a person. It has helped me take advantage of opportunities that have increased my confidence in believing I have the capability to further my education as a student of color and as a first-generation [college] student.” Isela’s greatest accomplishment has been growing her academic skills and being chosen as the Senior Student Ambassador for Homecoming 2018.
After high school, Isela plans to attend a 4-year university where she will study social work or social justice and minor in leadership. So far, she has been accepted to St. Catherine University, Hamline University, Augsburg University, and Metropolitan State University.

Christine attended Hillcrest Elementary and Oak Grove Middle schools. She has been in AVID all four years of high school Originally, Christine joined AVID to receive support in AP and honors classes as well as to help her prepare for college. “AVID has helped me acquire all the skills and techniques to help me accomplish my goals and ultimately graduate from college.” Christine’s greatest accomplishment has been earning an ‘A’ a long-term book project in her junior-year AP Interdisciplinary class.
After graduation, Christine plans to attend either Bemidji State University or Normandale Community College and major in Social Studies Secondary Education. So far, she has been accepted to Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, University of Wisconsin-Superior, and Normandale Community College.
Meet 2019 AVID Senior Keith Brown
Keith attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Oak Grove Middle schools. He has been in AVID all four years of high school! When Keith learned the different opportunities that AVID had to offer, he was persuaded to try it out. “AVID has helped me prepare for college by being organize and gaining more knowledge on to how be a better leader for myself and the community around me. I have learned that things can be challenging to do but have a growth mindset.” Keith’s greatest accomplishment has been doing well in his classes using all of the resources he was provided.
After graduation, Keith plans to attend a two year college and study computer sciences. He then plans to transfer to a four year college/university to obtain a degree an information and technology field. So far, Keith has been accepted to Normandale Community College.

Heriberto attended Indian Mounds Elementary and Valley View Middle Schools. He has been in AVID for 6 years! Heriberto joined AVID because he wants to be the first person in his family to go to college. His greatest success in high school has been keeping his GPA above 3.0. When asked how AVID has helped prepare him for his college/career goals, Heriberto replied, “[AVID] has helped me get into my dream school.”
After graduation, Heriberto plans to attend college to study accounting with a business management minor. So far, he has been accepted to Winona State University, Augsburg University, Coe College, Concordia University, and Hamline University.

Joseph attended Valley View Elementary and Valley View Middle School. He has been in AVID all four years of high school! Originally, Joseph joined AVID because some friends told him about the benefits of the program. AVID has helped Joseph recognize the importance of developing skills and strategies for overcoming obstacles. When asked what his greatest accomplishment has been, Joseph simply replied, “preparing to graduate.”
After graduation, Joseph plans to go to college and is still deciding where he would like to attend.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Amina Abbas
Amina has been in AVID for 5 years. She chose to participate in the AVID program because she wanted to go to college but did not know how and where to start. “AVID helped me see all the different careers I can choose from and which ones are the best fit for me and my interests.”
Amina’s greatest accomplishments in high school include passing AP World History and Honors English and Anatomy. She reports that, “so far that’s it, but I’m happy with what I got!”
After graduation, Amina plans to go abroad to study health science in Turkey. If that doesn’t work out, she will attend fall semester at Normandale Community College and transfer to University of Minnesota-Rochester. So far, Amina has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Rochester Community and Technical College.

Nicole has been in AVID for 3 years. She joined AVID because she knew she would need help developing the skills to get into and be successful in college. “I learned new study habits and I learned how to manage my time.”

Jennifer has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. When asked why she decided to join AVID, Jennifer responded, “I'm the first one to go to college AND graduate from high school in my entire family and I wanted to always have the support of AVID to be able to understand how to apply to college, get ACT help, and stay organized. [AVID] has helped me know what I want to do with my life and how I can make an easy transition from high school to college.”
Jennifer’s greatest accomplishments in high school included doing things outside of her comfort zone, maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA, excelling in courses she didn't think I could take, and paying her braces off by herself. After graduation, Jennifer plans work and go to college to study pre-law. So far, she has been accepted to Hamline University, St.Cloud State University, St. Catherine University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and University of St. Thomas.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Renee Castro
Renee has been in AVID for 1 year. She originally joined because a friend referred her and she knew it would help her with the college process. “It has helped me stay of task and gave me a good path to follow when it came to applying for college.”
Renee’s greatest success in high school has been overcoming a lot of difficult life experiences and growing as a person. “I once thought I wouldn't live to see tomorrow, but now I know I am going to wake up and go to college and live my life.”
After graduation, Renee plans to attend Hamline University and study law. She would like to practice as either a prosecuting attorney or a social justice defendant. So far, Renee has been accepted to Hamline University, North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Saint Mary, USF.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Erwin Enriquez
Erwin has been in AVID for 1 year. He joined because he knew AVID would help him prepare for and get into college. “I wanted to end my senior year knowing what I am going into in my college years. I feel like it helped me out a lot and that I know what I am going to get myself into.”
Erwin’s greatest accomplishment in high school was lettering in soccer and not giving up. After graduation, he plans to go to college and study computer engineering. So far, Erwin has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Upper Iowa University.

John has been in AVID for 6 years! He joined AVID because he knew it would help him get into college. “[AVID] has given me the tools necessary for success and for continuing my education after high school.”
Each trimester, Kennedy faculty members recognize two deserving students from each academic area to receive a Golden Torch Award. The students chosen show exceptional academic achievement or significant improvement. John’s greatest success in high school has been earning not one, but TWO Golden Torches!
After high school, John plans to attend a four year university and get a degree in biomedical engineering. So far, he has been accepted to University of Minnesota-Duluth and Augsburg University.

David has been in AVID for 3 years. He joined AVID because he knew he needed to find a way to work on college acceptance and getting ahead in school, for his future. David says, AVID has “given me time to work through and get guidance on my college work.” His greatest accomplishment in high school was earning the Bloomington United for Youth Volunteerism award.
After high school David plans to join the Army ROTC to serve as an officer. He has been accepted to Saint John’s University with a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship (including room and board) and University of Minnesota.

Stephanie joined AVID at Valley View Middle School in 7th grade and remained in the program for 6 years! “I joined AVID so I could learn more about college and so it could help me develop skills I need for college. I've learned how to take better notes, it has helped me be more organized, helped out with ACT test, and helped me apply for college and scholarships.”
Stephanie says her greatest accomplishment in high school was being accepted to several colleges of her choice. Upon graduation, she plans to study medicine. So far, Stephanie has been accepted to Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Cloud State University, St. Catherine University, Hamline University, University of St.Thomas, Winona State University, and College of St. Scholastica.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Luis Romero
Luis has been in AVID for 6 years, since 7th grade. “I decided to join AVID because I knew it would lead me down the right path. Even before I started, I knew I wanted to be the first in my family to go to college and a program like this would give me enough support to make it. AVID has helped me by making attainable goals all throughout my educational career and has helped me manage my time to be able and reach them.” Luis also says AVID has helped him become organized and prepared for all of his classes.
Luis’s greatest success in high school was being featured on the City of Bloomington’s #OneBloomington series (click to see his video). “I feel as though my personal story of struggles, failures, and successes throughout all of my life can help others.”
After high school Luis plans to attend a 4-year university to study engineering or political science. So far, he has been accepted to University of Minnesota-Duluth and University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Margarita Sanchez
Margarita has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. When asked why she decided to join AVID, she responded, “As a first-generation college student in my family, I decided to join because it would help me develop more college-like skills to get me ready for college and to build myself up as a person for the future.” Margarita believes AVID has helped her achieve her college goals by visiting college campuses and helping her determine which college would be the best fit for her. “Career goal wise, AVID has helped me by going through different surveys and activities to see what paths and steps I can take towards my career.”
One of Margarita’s biggest successes in high school was forming the Latino Club Dance Crew. “It has been a goal for me to form and establish a group like this on my own, even though it can be frustrating sometimes, especially if you're the leader.”
Margarita’s plans after graduation are to visit Mexico for the summer and return in time to begin the fall 2018 semester at Normandale Community College. So far, Margarita has been accepted to Normandale Community College and Hennepin Technical College.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Abdulla Shigidy
Abdulla has been in AVID for 6 years! He joined AVID because he knew he wanted to go to college and be prepared for it. “AVID helped show me how much I’d have to work when I get into college. I completed 11th grade with all A’s.”
Abdulla’s greatest success in high school was making the national wrestling team during summer of 2017. Upon graduation, he plans to go to a 4-year university to wrestle and study sports and marketing or criminal justice. So far, Abdulla has been accepted to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Morgan has been in AVID for 1 year. “I decided to join AVID because it's a great program and I thought it could help me in school.” Morgan says AVID has helped her build organization skills, as well as ensure she is on track with college deadlines.

Leslie has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. “I decided to join AVID because no one in my family has gone to college, and I didn't think it was an option for me until I joined.”
Leslie says AVID has helped her with organizing her time, teamwork, and collaboration skills. Her biggest successes have been maintaining a 3.5+ GPA throughout high school and participating in GopherBusiness, a week-long summer enrichment program at the University of Minnesota, designed to encourage talented high school students from diverse backgrounds to explore the many opportunities a career in business presents.
After high school, Leslie plans to attend a four year college, graduate, and eventually publish a book of poems or short stories. So far, she has been accepted to Knox College, Hamline University, University of St. Thomas, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Drake University, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Augsburg University.

Kaelin has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. She joined AVID as a way to become more aware and prepared for college. She says AVID “helped me to understand the importance of it all.” Kaelin’s biggest accomplishment in high school was earning honorable mention in swimming, twice!
After high school, Kaelin plans to study chemistry at St. Catherine University, where she has been awarded a half-ride scholarship and will be competing on the championship swim team in sprinting (50 and 100 freestyle). She was also accepted to St. Catherine University.
Meet 2018 AVID Senior Madeline Wuest
Maddie has been in AVID all 4 years of high school. She joined AVID because she knew it would support her in her other classes and prepare her for college and eventually her career. AVID has helped Maddie by “being more organized and having better problem solving skills.”
Maddie’s great accomplishment in high school was lettering in swimming, being a varsity swimmer, and setting personal records in the pool. Her plans after high school including attending Normandale Community College, where she has already been accepted.
Meet AVID Senior Ernest Asare
Ernest has been in AVID for all four years of high school. Initially, he joined AVID because it “sounded good” to him. Through AVID, Ernest says he has built good study skills that have prepared him for college. According to Ernest, graduating from high school is his biggest accomplishment so far!
Ernest has been accepted to Hennepin Technical College and Mesabi Range Community and Technical College.
Meet AVID Senior Oscar Ayala
Oscar has been in AVID for over five years. When asked why he decided to join AVID, he replied, “because I need to have the guidance and intelligence to pursue a college dream that a first generation American would want. Also, I'm going to be the first person in my family to go to college, and I want to make my family proud of me. When I heard about AVID I thought it was a good way of shaping me up into the best student I can be.”
Further, Oscar believes AVID has helped him focus on education, particularly in pursuing higher education, and has prepared him with essential skills to have in college such as organization and note taking. His greatest accomplishments in high school have been competing in the History Day state competition representing Kennedy’s first exhibit board presentation ever and lettering in academics his sophomore year. So far, he has been accepted to Minnesota State University-Mankato, University of Wisconsin-Superior, and St Cloud State University.
Meet AVID Senior Brandon Barrientos
Brandon has been in AVID for over five years. He explained he joined AVID “to get into college and take advantage of the opportunities that my parents were never given.” Brandon fully believes AVID has helped him become ready for college.
After graduation, Brandon plans to attend a four-year college or university and major in elementary education. His greatest accomplishments in high school have been his success in the soccer program and strong academics. Further, Brandon was recently honored with a Kennedy Senior Achievement Award in Leadership!
So far, Brandon has been accepted to Concordia University-Moorhead.
Meet AVID Senior Kayla Benitez Sanchez
Kayla joined AVID 5 years ago. When asked why she decided to join AVID, Kayla replied, “I wanted to accomplish my goal of being the first person in my family to go to college. AVID has helped me build my confidence and be on top with my school work.”
Her ultimate goal is to attend a 4-year university and major in Global Studies/International Business with a minor in French. Kayla reports her biggest success as having been accepted into six colleges! Those colleges are: University of Minnesota-Duluth, Augsburg College, College of St. Scholastica, Hamline University, St. Cloud State University, and Gustavus Adolphus College.
Meet AVID Senior Zakia Bommersbach
Zakia has been in AVID for 6 years. Initially, teachers at her middle school referred her to the program, but once she applied and was accepted, Zakia came to realize the power and importance of AVID.
As a result of her hard work and the support of her AVID family, Zakia has been accepted to Minnesota State University-Mankato, St. Cloud State University, Winona State University, and Augsburg College. She plans to attend Augsburg this fall. When asked how AVID has helped support her college dreams, she replied, “It got me a scholarship to Augsburg!”
Meet AVID Senior Ty Brown
Ty joined AVID three years ago to get help on his journey to college. He says AVID has helped him find colleges with the right programs that fit his interests and aptitudes and apply to them.
After high school, Ty will attend Minnesota State University-Mankato and eventually become an audio production specialist.
Meet AVID Senior Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries
Alyssa has been in AVID for three years. She joined AVID because she “knew that it would help with college stuff.” Alyssa says AVID has pushed her to do well in school and to be prepared for college. She says her biggest accomplishment so far has been earning a 3.1 GPA and enrolling in and passing all of her honors classes.
Alyssa’s plans after high school include going to college and playing basketball and/or lacrosse. She has been accepted to Hamline University. And, she received a Hamline Student First scholarship to help her with tuition and fees!
Meet AVID Senior Max Collins
Max joined AVID 5 years ago because he felt joining would give him a 100% guarantee to go to college. When asked how AVID has helped prepare him for college/career goals, Max explained it “has pushed me in my school life. It also pushed my outside life to achieve other significant goals in life.” His biggest success in high school has been taking Advanced Placement classes and getting excellent grades.
Max’s ultimate goal is to go to a four-year university, complete his bachelor’s degree, and go on to law school. Max has been accepted to Minnesota State University-Mankato, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and Hamline University.
Meet AVID Senior Erick Cruz Lopez
Erick has been in AVID for 5 years. He will be the first person in his family to attend college. Erick says he joined AVID because he wanted to know how to do everything college-related correctly so that he could be successful.
“I learned what was important to get into college. This made me more involved and made me take harder classes. Also, it made me more organized. Furthermore, an unintended side effect was that it gave me more confidence.”
In addition to Iowa State University, Erick has been accepted to the University of Minnesota where he will be attending classes through the College of Science and Engineering.
Meet AVID Senior Diane Dewey
Diane Joined AVID six years ago because she wanted to go to college. She says AVID has helped her be successful through developing multiple new skills.
Diane reports her biggest accomplishment in high school has been making it to her senior year.
Diane has been accepted to and will attend Normandale Community College this fall.
Meet AVID Senior Eduardo Gomez
Eduardo has been in AVID for over 5 years! Initially, he joined AVID because he “needed support.” Through AVID’s support, Eduardo has been accepted to Augsburg College, University of Wisconsin-Superior, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and the College of St. Scholastica (among these were his top three colleges!). Additionally, Eduardo is an Act Six semifinalist. Act Six scholars are actively recruited from across the region and chosen through a rigorous, three-phase selection process including an in-depth application, an academic and leadership event, and prospective college visit.
Meet AVID Senior Daniel Li
Daniel has been in AVID for 4 years. Initially, he joined because he knew he wanted to go to college and thought he would “give [AVID] a try.” Daniel is happy to report that AVID has definitely helped him become prepared for college! So far, he has been accepted to the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State University-Mankato, University of St. Thomas, Hamline University, and Augsburg College.
When asked about his biggest AVID success, Daniel replied, “getting accepted by all of my college choices.”
Meet AVID Senior Sydney Marr
Sydney was convinced to join AVID through a friend who was already enrolled in the program. This is her third year in AVID at Kennedy High School.
Sydney says AVID has helped her with college acceptance and preparing for the ACT exams. Her biggest accomplishment so far is becoming captain of the softball team.
Sydney has been accepted to and plans to attend Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Meet AVID Senior Edwin Pliego
Edwin has been AVID for over five years. “I joined AVID because at the time I didn't believe I had a chance in attending college. Nobody in my family has gone to college nor has anybody graduated high school. I knew I wanted to go college but didn't have the resources and support necessary. This is when I found out about AVID and have been in the program since.”
Edwin explains that AVID has prepared him for college by providing good study habits and helping him get over his fear of speaking in front of people. His biggest success in high school has been being accepted into several colleges. Edwin says this has made his family here and back home very proud. “Now all that's left for me is to decide [where to attend] college and graduate.” Edwin plans to study nursing. Currently he has been accepted to St Cloud State University, Minnesota State University-Mankato, College of St. Scholastica, Normandale Community College, and is on the waiting list for the University of Minnesota.
Meet AVID Senior Rosa Ruiz-Velazquez
Rosa has been in AVID for four years. She joined because she knew she wanted to be prepared for college and the ACT test, and recognized AVID would support her through high school. When asked how AVID has helped prepare her for college/career goals, Rosa explained that it has helped her understand what college will truly be like, and helped her with all of the processes necessary for applying and being accepted to the colleges of her choice. When asked what her biggest success has been in high school, Rosa replied, “being accepted to college.”
Rosa has been accepted to Concordia College and Hamline University. She plans to eventually become a doctor and has decided she will begin that journey at Concordia!
Meet AVID Senior Melissa Tayun
Melissa has been in AVID for three years. She joined AVID because she knew it was a class where students learned skills and strategies for success in college, and “I knew that I wasn't going to think about college if I didn't have a class that supported me.”
Melissa explains that AVID has helped her become more organized and prepared for college. She points to programs like AVID and College Possible as having played major roles in her success in high school and her preparedness for college. Through this support, Melissa was encouraged to apply to college early and has already been accepted to Normandale Community College, St. Cloud State University, and Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Meet AVID Senior Kierra Upsher
Kierra joined AVID seven years ago as a 6th grader in a different district and was fortunate to be able to enter the Kennedy AVID Elective when she enrolled at BPS! Kierra says she knew AVID would help her get into college and be organized.
“I’m much more organized, I’m used to using a planner, I know how to take good notes, and I’m good at studying them.” Kierra’s biggest accomplishment so far has been taking and doing well in AP Calculus.
Kierra has been accepted at Normandale Community College. She plans to transfer to Minnesota State University-Mankato’s college of education and become a teacher for middle school and high school math or art. Eventually, she plans to become a college professor.
Meet AVID Senior Michelle Vega Quintanilla
Michelle has been in AVID for three years. She joined AVID because she felt it would be a good opportunity to learn more about college, get organized, and be successful.
Michelle says, “AVID has helped me with the ACT and apply for scholarships and to colleges.” Her biggest success in high school has been maintaining good grades in all of her classes and being accepted to college.
Upon graduation, Michelle plans to attend Normandale Community College.
Meet AVID Senior Phuong Vu
Phuong has been in AVID for four years. She joined AVID because she needed help learning about colleges, getting scholarships, and getting organized.
Phuong says AVID has helped her discover her college/career goals through the MCIS website/tools. Ultimately, her goal is to get through school happy and with good grades, and to make other people happy.
Phuong has been accepted to St. Cloud State University and St. Catherine University.

Andre has been in AVID for more than 5 years! When asked why he decided to join AVID, Andre stated, “Because I wanted to have a head start when it came to getting ready for college and AVID seemed like a good opportunity to get that head start.” Andre believes that AVID has helped push him academically by encouraging him to take harder classes to both challenge him intellectually but also to boost his high school transcript. Further, he feels that the AVID strategies he’s learned, such as taking Cornell Notes, will help him in college and beyond!

She joined AVID because she believed it would help her have a deeper understanding of her classes and help her become more organized. “AVID has encouraged me to aim for leadership positions in my school and it has prepared me to manage my time [so I don’t] have to feel too overwhelmed. AVID has been one of the best things that has happened to me academically because it is one of the greatest factors that has shaped me into the person I am today.”
