Spotlight on AVID
Welcome to AVID!
Beginning this fall, Bloomington is adding another school to our AVID program: Indian Mounds Elementary!
AVID Elementary is designed to be embedded into the daily instruction of all elementary classrooms, across entire grade levels, to impact school-wide structures. AVID’s implementation resources, trainings, and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through the growth mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations. The addition of the 4th and 5th grade teams at Indian Mounds provides even more of our Bloomington students with the skills they need to successfully make the transition from elementary to middle school.
A one-pager is a strategy for responding to a text through writing and illustration.

AVID CRT Breakout Session
Eighth grade AVID students from Valley View Middle School visited Kennedy High School on Friday, January 15th. While there, they met teachers, administrators, and students; attended class with a high school buddy; learned about the amazing opportunities for students at KHS; interacted with a panel of high school students; and enjoyed a pizza lunch. Quote of the day: "That is the best field trip we went on all year!"
VVE AVID Central Site Visit
During January’s workshop day, Kennedy High School and Valley View Middle School teamed up to offer a breakout session on Culturally Relevant Teaching practices. Don’t worry if you missed the session. The presentation is available to all staff and materials are linked within.
Shannon Bailey, our AVID Central Division Program Manager, visited Valley View Elementary on Tuesday, February 9. During her visit, she met with the 4th and 5th grade teams, Principal Cori Thompson, and observed students during class. It was a great visit and helped the team begin preparing for the upcoming showcase taking place at Valley View on April 8, 2016.

AVID Weekly Article of the Month
Elementary: Mowed Swamp Breeds Mosquitoes
In the graphic “Mowed swamp breeds mosquitoes,” the author addresses the attempt to reduce the populations of one type of mosquito by cutting down plants in a specific area.
Secondary: Musical Preferences are Linked to Cognitive Styles
WICOR Strategy of the Month
In the journal article, “Musical Preferences are Linked to Cognitive Styles,” the authors researched how musical preferences are related to cognitive styles. The researchers found that there are consistent associations between empathy and musical preferences. The researchers extended their research findings to examine how music preferences are related to different brain types. They concluded that musical preferences do correlate with different cognitive types.
