A story of Local Response by Fr Joe Ngamkhuchung
The CLCP program began with general awareness and SALT visits to families. The community got sensitised gradually. The behaviour change was gradually taking place as the people came to know the roots of HIV transmission and that there was medicine which made people infected by HIV live for a long time.
There was general suspicion of HIV infection among drug users. Because of fear of infection to contact, through the sharing of drinking and eating utensils, the families used to discard or throw away the glass or plate use by the boys using drugs. HIV meant death and due to lack of proper information fear gripped the village.
Molvom village is 35 km away from Dimapur, a town in Nagaland, India. In 2007, ACP was initiated by the 'People in need foundation' (PNF).
Here was the situation of the village before the programme started. Heavy drug use by young people occurred and several of the young people had met their untimely death.
The situation has now changed. Today there is a 19-year-old HIV-positive girl who is a youth leader in the village.
