Global Learning Festival 2012 - Community Life Competence
A perspective from Aniruddhan Vasudevan
SALT visits to SIAAP-supported ‘Rural Youth Project’ in Thiruvannamalai and Nagapattinam Districts
Participants, divided into eight groups, visited two different project sites – one each on Thiruvannamalai and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu. While the former was a community organization run by women in sex work, the latter was a rural youth project in a coastal area.
Why is this called a SALT visit?
What was telling for me was something that emerged during a preliminary discussion among the documentation team on 19th November. While questions about how to document the conversations with the community members came up, it was collectively agreed by everyone that if the visit has to be a SALT visit and not just any other visit, one shouldn’t be taking notes while people are talking. Instead, we should be stimulating, appreciating, listening and transferring! This was a remarkable insight for me.
Though I could not go on the SALT visit, I was present the next day for the After Action Reflection (AAR) done by members of the SALT teams, and I could understand the difference it makes to just be present, listen and reflect.
