A story of Local Response by Vicnesh M
In Singapore, people live in units in multiple storey blocks. Everyone is busy with their own lives and people seldom communicate with their neighbours. Strengths are seldom highlighted. Issues are seldom raised.
In this setting, something happened…
There was a single mother with 6 children who struggled to make ends meet. She provided for her children to the best of her ability but for many of her neighbours, this was not enough. She was labelled as an irresponsible and incapable mother.
I approached a few of the mothers and highlighted the situation. I asked questions such as, ‘How would you feel if you were caught in such a situation?’ and ‘If you were in this situation, what kind of support would you need?’
That little push made the mothers gather to talk about the situation. The affected mother was also present. When the mothers began to share, they became connected. I started to hear them talk about their ‘their struggles’, ‘their emotions’, ‘the kind of support needed’.
The affected mother came to be seen in a better light and the mothers began to give their support.
Sometimes a little push is needed. When the community takes ownership, they are able and willing to do amazing things.
When we believe in humans and their power to change their situation, they are capable of amazing things. Sometimes they just need a little push.
