Free Pile Assistant

1 hours credit*

Your job is to...

    • 1) Wash and dry all clothes waiting to be incorporated into the free pile (generally in a large bin in the laundry room, across from the dryers). Maintain a log of quarters used so that the house manager can compensate you for laundry ($0.75 per load; $0.25~washer and $0.50~dryer). Use warm water for the washer and high heat for the dryer.

    • 2) Fold, hang, display and sort the free pile donations so that they are organized and accessible to those who may want them.

      • Anything wearable that can't be washed must either be sent to Goodwill or trashed (ie, hats)

    • 3) Periodically dispose of those things that are useless and people probably won't want to take. Talk to the Waste Reduction Manager (who is ultimately in charge of the free pile) about recycling them. He/She can also arrange for trading free pile stuff with other co-ops.

You ought also to sweep the floor, as needed.

NOTE: There is a door in the free pile room which leads to the furnace. The door is clearly marked off with tape. The area in front of the door must be kept clear in case access to the furnace is required. It is a fire hazard if the door is blocked.

*Some weeks you will need to invest more time into keeping the free pile in order—particularly at the beginning and end of the semester—others less. If you invest enough time up front clearing out the less desirable junk and organizing what remains, you'll get to devote fewer hours in the future!
