email filters
There are two ways you can set up an email filter for the house email lists: gmail filters, and google groups digest.
A) To set up a gmail filter:
What: Gmail lets your make filters to sort your mail before you read it. This is a feature of gmail that can be applied to anything, not just the house email list.
Why: So house emails don't clutter your inbox. Some people like to tuck them away to read later. Sometimes this means they never read them. Use at your own discretion.
How:
1) Go to your gmail account
2) on the gmail home screen click on the little arrow pointing down in the search bar on the top
3) in the To field write "hip_house@lists.berkeley.edu"
4) click create filter in the bottom right of the window field
5) toggle "skip the inbox" and "apply the label"
6) in the field next to "apply the label" make a new label (such as "House List")
7) toggle the "Also apply filter to matching conversations" next to the create filter button
8) Create the filter! Viola, all house emails are in a little box on the side that you can check when you want to!
B) To set up a list digest:
What: Google groups allows you to receive emails in batches, rather than instantly as they come in one at a time.
Why: So house emails don't clutter your inbox. Emails will be delayed (you don't get anything until the next day, or until 25 messages have accumulated, depending of what options you pick)
How:
In gmail, click on those 9 little squares, and go to google groups.
In google groups, click "My groups" in the left-hand menu.
Select "My groups in berkeley.edu"
Once you find the list you want to turn into a digest, click open the drop down menu that says "Every new message" and turn it to "Send daily summaries" or "Combined updates" mode. Now you will get either 1 email per day max, or bundles of 25. The digest always sends you things after they happen which makes you feel like you might as well not be on the list at all...
