Garbage Pickup

HiP has four regular pickup schedules with the city of Berkeley:

Other pickups (special recycling, hazardous waste, etc) are scheduled as needed by the maintenance manager or waste reduction manager.

Here's a Socratic dialogue written by Miguel at CO:

NOTE: you should probably go through our own house-level MM or WRM before you contact CO because:

a) It's their job to know what's going on

b) They are better at their job when they know whats going on

c) CO works better when they have a single point of contact at the house level

d) House-level managers (usually) have better accountability and follow-through

It's after 2:30 pm on a pickup day and my stuff hasn't been picked up yet - what's going on?

Great question! You should call CFS (510-549-5969) or email food@bsc.coop so we can report a missed pickup with the city.

The sheet says I should have two trash cans but I only have one and it's the wrong size - what should I do?

Wow - another great question! You should email Richie (richie@bsc.coop) and he will investigate!

I don't need to know this, taking out the trash is the WRMs job!

Wrong! Making sure trash and recycling flow out of the house in an orderly way is everyone's responsibility - help your WRM help you!

Oh man, I have so much trash right now - what should I do?

Call the office or email Richie to request an extra pickup! Extra pickups cost money - try to request them only when you need them.

We consistently produce more stuff than I have space for - how can I increase service?

Well, I'm glad you asked! Again, let Richie know if you're interested in 1. adding bins, 2. increasing the size of bins, or 3. increasing pickup frequency. What's cool is that Fiber and BCP are both free. Trash and compost cost money. It also costs money to add pickup days, and the City might not be able to come out on a certain day based on their routes, etc. etc. Richie will guide you through these questions, with the help of your WRM and the Waste Reduction Coordinator.

I have big bulky things like mattresses or broken furniture to get rid of - can you help with that?

Yes - Central Maintenance can help you with a dump run! Fill out the CM Work Order Form and they will get in touch with you!

I have more questions and want to learn more or I have an idea about how we can make trash and recycling int he co-ops better!

That's awesome! Feel free to email me or Richie or call the office and we can chat! Also, reach out to your WRM or the Waste Reduction Coordinator - they are in charge of taking the lead on projects and waste-related problem-solving!
