Breadwinner

1.5 hours credit per run

This shift is currently done twice per week, Tuesdays and Saturday. It is possible for the Workshift Manager to switch our days (i.e., permanently for the semester), but only the WM can do so. On Sundays the bakery closes at 3pm. You can still do this shift if you dont have a car of your own, if you talk to the WM FAR (weeks) in advance so that they can help you get on the house City Car Share account.

(Adapted from description by Tim R, former breadwinner.)

This is the workshift wherein one goes to pick up free bread. That's right, FREE bread. It's a great deal, since a 1.5 hour workshift gains the house $100+ worth of fresh, organic bread.

    • Be available: the shifts must be done on those days at that time. The time is 5pm on weekdays and Saturday, or 4pm on Sunday. Once you establish a rapport it's possible to try and switch days, but right now those are it.

    • Have [access to] a car, or get added to the house's City Carshare account. It's about a 1 minute drive to the Telegraph location, 3 min. to the College Ave. location, and 8 min. to the Solano Ave. location.

    • Have a friendly demeanor and a modicum of emotional intelligence. Do not piss off the nice Noah's people.

    • Rotate and consolidate bagels, sanitize bins, and put away new bagels. This is important. Cleaning the bins is part of the shift.

Here is what you do to get bagels:

    • Toss any stale or moldy bagels, consolidate bins, and sanitize bins before you go, so they'll be dry by the time you're back. When it's warm the bagels won't last long in the bins. If you have lots it's best to toss the oldest bagels in the compost or even better, email the house suggesting it gets used for bagel pizza, salad croutons, or bagel bread pudding.

    • You arrive at 2344 Telegraph, 3170 College Ave, or 1883 Solano Ave., at 4pm Sunday or 5pm on weekdays or Saturday (aim for 4:45). It takes them a few minutes to bag up the bagels but it's good to check in and let them know you're there. Their number, in case anything comes up: Telegraph (510) 849-9951, College (510) 654-0944, or Solano (510) 525-4447. They know us as "HiP House" and may be confused if you say "Hillegass Parker".

    • Compensation: Everybody loves the Bagel Bandit. Also, it's about a .3, 2.8, or 1.4 mile drive round-trip (respectively); talk to the house manager for gas money, which will be reimbursed at the IRS standard mileage rates, or if you're a member of City Carshare, add yourself to the house's business account (ask your WM about how to do this).
