Career Exploration

Directions:

Special educators at the high school level provide an additional layer of support for students with physical or neurological differences that most other high schoolers get excited on their own. This is transition planning. Transition planning is the purposeful assessment and plan on what steps to take in order to reach the student's goals they have for themselves after high school. This is a required section of the IEP for ALL students with disabilities after they turn 16 (14 in PA). This is due to the historical nature that most individuals with disabilities have poor post-secondary outcomes, whether it is succeeding in college, independently living, or gaining competitive employment.

Your mission for this quest is to complete the career inventory on PA Career Zone. This is one of the main assessment tools special educators use to help determine what jobs fit a students' interests. Once you complete the inventory, reflect on the following:

  1. Reflect on your results, did you results match the current field choice that you are currently pursuing? Did your results surprise you?

  2. What are some of the benefits and/or drawbacks to this inventory?

  3. How might this tool be useful for a student with an intellectual or developmental disability?
