Two Brand New, Hands-On Classes!

Post date: Aug 18, 2016 11:18:3 AM

We are excited to offer two new, exciting, hand-on learning opportunities this year:

Students in "The School Lunch Class: Exploring Food Systems" class will plan, budget, source, prepare, and serve school lunch every Friday!  Students will learn culinary skills and food safety skills as well as nutrition, budgeting, and other food systems topics.  The class will have numerous opportunities for students to meet SWEs as well as possible industry certifications.  The class will probably meet 3rd period in the fall semester, but could be adjusted based on the schedules of interested students.  The course will count as 1 elective credit for 11th and 12th grade students.

Students can also take a 2-credit Navigation course that meets during 4th period on blue days and all day on blue Thursdays.  Thursdays will be "on the water" days, where students learn and apply navigation skills on board a USCG certified vessel.  By the end of the course, the students will be well prepared for the USCG "six-pack" captain's license exam.

Students interested in signing up for either course should contact Mr. West at 348-2303 or toddwest@dishs.org.
