UPDATED 4/24/13: The lockdown drill has been rescheduled to the week of 4/29/13.  Please see the story below for more details.

UPDATED 3/11/13: The lockdown drill that had been planned this week has been postponed at the request of the Hancock Country Sheriff's Department.  We will provide more information about a rescheduled drill as it becomes available.

Ensuring the safety of all of our students has always been the top priority of Deer Isle-Stonington High School.  We regularly evaluate and update our school safety policies and procedures.  The tragic events which occurred in Newtown, Connecticut in December have caused us to once again reevaluate how we manage and ensure student safety.

As part of this process, we will be holding a lockdown drill in conjunction with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department during the week of 3/11-3/15 4/29/-5/3.  Unlike past lockdown drills, this one will be done with students present.  Please note that this is not a mock event- we will simply be practicing our lockdown procedure with students in the building.  The lock down drill will be debriefed with emergency responders and school staff following the drill.

We understand that each family may want to discuss the topic of school violence with their children in a different way.  We encourage you to talk about school safety with your children in a way that makes sense for your family.  If you would like some tips or resources, please visit the “Parent Tab” on the school website (www.dishs.org) or call Sandy Robinson or Roberta Johnson in the Guidance Office (348-2288).

Deer Isle-Stonington High School will continue to make every effort to ensure the safety of our students while trying to maintain an inviting and welcoming school atmosphere.  If you have any questions about the lockdown drill, please do not hesitate to contact me, either before or after the drill.

Sincerely- Todd West, Principal
