Discussion on Future Changes to Honor Parts Policy to Precede School Board Meeting Wednesday 4/20

Post date: Apr 18, 2016 12:32:9 PM

There will be a special meeting of the CSD#13 School Committee at 5:30pm on Wednesday, 4/20 in the high school cafeteria.  The agenda is linked, below.

Preceding the meeting, there will be a short discussion on potential changes to the honor parts policy. The transition to proficiency-based diplomas in 2019 offers the opportunity to review school policies that may be affected by this change.  The policy for selecting honor parts (valedictorian, salutatorian, first essayist, and second essayist) for graduation is one of those policies. A committee, comprised of Liz Steele and Jane Osborne from the school board and Todd West, Principal DISHS, is seeking public input, particularly from parents, teachers and students, about which policy to use.

Linked below is a memo which lays out 3 options commonly used by schools.  Other suggestions are welcome. We will be holding a public meeting to have an introductory discussion of this issue in the high school cafeteria on Wednesday, April 20th at 5:00 pm, immediately prior to the School Board Budget Meeting, which is at 5:30 pm. Other meetings to discuss options will be scheduled as needed. Suggestions or comments may also be submitted by emailing Jane Osborne @ jlosborne207@gmail.com.
