"Pathways 101" Course Available to Interested Students August 18-22

Post date: Jul 25, 2014 1:46:38 PM

DISHS will be offering a credit-bearing Pathways 101 course the week of August 18-22.  Students who successfully complete this week-long course as well as a few commitments in the fall semester will earn one full credit and will not have to take the Pathways 101 course in the fall, opening up an additional slot in the student’s fall schedule for taking an an elective class, etc.  Successful completion of Pathways 101 will prepare students for further Pathways courses in the Marine Studies and Arts Pathway as well as the Health Care Pathway in the 2015-16 school year.

With an emphasis on hands-on, outside the classroom learning, students in the summer Pathways 101 class will work with community partners to conduct a hands-on field study at Southeast Harbor, both on the shore and on the water.  Sketching, photography, and graphic design will be emphasized.  Student will also create, conduct, and present a short independent project and will start a personal learning plan.

To earn a full credit, students will need to fulfill a small number of commitments in the fall semester, including a regular meeting during the focused study period to complete their personal learning plan, presentation of their personal learning plan at parent/teacher conferences, participation in field trips to Hurricane Island and the Coastal Field Studies at Bowdoin College, and 2-3 shorter, local field trips, some of which may be outside the school day.

Summer Pathways 101 will run from 8am-4pm daily.  Students will need to provide their own transportation to school and from school.  We are willing to help arrange car pools if that will make participation easier for some students.  Lunch will be provided each day.
