Recreation of “North Shore, Baffin Island” by Lawren Harris

This painting by Lawren S Harris uses a variety of elements of design. One example is the use of colour and value. By using colour in this painting, it uses different intensities of blue that create depth and realism (similar to the values scale). The different tones of blue and green hues add a unique touch to its overall effect. Creating depth is also an indication of value. Using different shades of blue creates depth in the painting. It creates movement and is able to grasp the viewers’ attention, instead of motionless art. Value is used to create depth and a three-dimensional effect - instead of looking “flat” with no signs of extent. Another element used is texture. Using texture in any art piece implies that any texture can be felt in the components of painting. More specifically, I have used different shades to create textures such as grooves and indents in the mountains/rocks. Texture “describes” the surface of the painting and how it creates a realistic effect. Another element of design that is used in this painting is form. The mountains give off a three-dimensional effect by using different shades of blue and their different sizes. The depth in the clouds also perceives themselves as “floating” which is incredibly eye-catching. When looking at the painting, it is 3-D from all perspectives. From my perspective, the variation in size and shape adds an abstract feel to the art. The curves and lines are abstract but represent mountains perfectly. The landscape shown in this painting is elegant and peaceful - an amazing learning experience to recreate.
