Music to Me

Acrylic paint, 16in x 20in, April 2 2021.

This is my piece entitled “Music to Me”. The medium used here is acrylic paint with paintbrushes and palette knives. The final piece was inspired by surrealist art as well as my favourite pop artists. Specifically and obviously, Hannah Hoch, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. The painting expresses the personal feeling of what music means and feels like to me. In the piece, I try to show happiness and a sense of lightness in the “music” by using bright, lively colours. This represents the happiness and comfort music brings. Next, I used dark, muted colours to show dreariness/ monotony in the surrounding background. What I tried to represent and achieve in the piece was something I enjoyed looking at as well as something another person could find meaning in. Most of all to evoke a feeling of “I know what that means, that is the feeling I get when______.” Personally, the feeling is what emotions music evokes in me but it could mean anything for anyone. The piece taught me a lot about being patient and experimenting with different colours and application techniques. I really enjoy the final piece. It looks exactly how I envisioned it would, and I hope others enjoy looking at the painting and finding meaning in it too.
