For my Group of Seven assignment I decided to recreate a painting of the “Mountain and Glacier” by Lawren Harris. I decided to make a replica of this image because it sets me in a very calm and motivated mood. By looking at the mountains I dream about the days when I was a little boy snowboarding and those days were one of the best of my life. Perhaps when I hang that picture in my room it will make my days more positive and brighter.

Step by step the directions on the slides were very helpful. It was my first time painting on canvas with acrylic paint. It was an interesting experience mixing different colours to create various shades as I had only limited colours. Primarily I was trying to recreate the colours and mood of the original image therefore I tried to mix and match different shades of colours using what I had. In some cases where I didn't have the exact colour I was using the shade that I thought was most applicable for this palette of colours.

The elements of design shown in this image are contrast, balance, harmony and emphasis. There is plenty of contrast in this image such as the dark mountains against the white and blueish snow and the sky. There is a good balance between the overall amount of mountain mass and snow with the sky space. Perfect and connected geometrical shapes of mountains in the natural setting create a true sense of harmony in this artwork. In my opinion in this picture the author helps the audience envision the beauty of the snow mountain landscape through contrast of colors, balance of shapes and harmonic approach throughout the piece. In this sense this is how the “Mountain and Glaciers” image communicates the principles of contrast, balance, harmony and emphasis.
