I painted this artwork of a girl sitting at her desk in the dark with the only light shining on her face coming from her computer screen. I decided to paint this monochrome blue because computers emit blue light, but it can also be perceived as a sad or serious emotion. Along with colour, some art elements and principles I used were emphasis, proportion, value, shape, and unity. I created this painting using acrylic paint and applied it with either hard or soft edge brush strokes. I used soft edge brush strokes in areas that I wanted to blend like on the face, and I used hard edge brush strokes in place I wanted colour blocking like around the screen. When starting this painting I tackled it by starting with the lightest values and gradually adding the darker ones. My goal with this painting was to make it look realistic and feel relatable. I think I’ve achieved the relatable part but not so much the realistic part. From working on this piece I learned that when working with light focused paintings you need to have very good observation skills to point out where each value is placed. The end result is good but not exactly what I imagined. I imagined something more realistic but the problem with my artwork lies in the base sketch rather than the colours in my opinion. I now know that in the future I should make the sketch exactly how you want it and never to rush it.
