Through

Acrylic Painting, 16"20" April 6, 2021

My art piece is composed of a person sitting in a small, isolated and dark cave. On the other side of the waterfall, which is blocking the person in the cave, on the other side is a beautiful natural scenery. My work is titled ‘Through’, and principles and elements such as balance, colour, value, form, and more are noticeably used in the piece. I used darker values and dimmer colours in the cave to convey the emotion and created form with every object I made to improve the accuracy. I balanced my piece by making the waterfall fall on the more empty side with the cave, because the nature side already had many elements. This helped balance the piece and made it more visually appealing. My piece is made from acrylic paints, and is on a 16’ by 20’ canvas. I used multiple techniques including stroking, stippling and mixing water in my paint. The big idea behind my artwork was the message. The person blocked in the cave symbolizes how, even if you're in a dark place and feel hopeless, we just have to get through the hard things before we reach paradise. I tried to express a languishing emotion in the cave, but a graceful emotion outside. My goal with this piece was to show people they are not alone and I want them to feel inspired when they view the piece. I want the viewers to feel motivated to get through the hard things because at the end of all the pain, is the amazing things life has to offer. My overall thoughts on my finished piece is that I am proud of how it turned out. I think every technique, colour, strategy and detail I put into the piece all worked together with unity and created the piece I had created in my head.
