Students will be introduced to the world of Mermaids. Mermaids are the stuff of legends and folklore. Cultures from all over the world have stories about this mythological sea creature.
Why are mermaids so universal in folklore stories from around the world?
Using a pencil, draw your own version of a mermaid or merman.
Time to add color. Don't rush it! Use crayons and markers. I like to outline the figure in marker and then use a crayon for skin color. Crayons create a softer and more natural texture for skin. Make sure you add details: sea flowers in the hair, shell necklace, maybe they are holding a treasure chest, or a trident. Try to balance your markers with your crayons and create a mixed media piece.
Cut out your mermaid and glue to your watercolor background.
Add iridescent circles to finalize your mermaid art work.
Students: Will bring their own pencil, eraser, crayons, markers, scissors and glue stick to class.
