Introduction

The plague...bad pandemic ...devastated Europe by killing approximately a third (33%) of the population. Furthermore, Europe's encounter with plague had economic, social, and religious effects that vastly changed European society and contributed to Europe's emergence into the Renaissance and towards an Age of Exploration. 

The Renaissance was a period of rebirth and rediscovery of the importance of art and science. This rekindling of intellectual and cultural pursuits created the fertile ground in which innovations and technological advances propelled Europeans to expand beyond their borders and chart the globe.

One of those great technological achievements that made that possible was the compass. 

Procedure

Create a beautiful and intriguing compass rose.

1. Using a compass, draw several concentric circles. Remote Students  draw concentric circles with plates and cups.

2. Design a balanced and symmetrical compass. Be unique with your choices-think nature, flowers, ocean, celestial......

3. Use sharpies to color. Create a color story to enhance your design.

4. Take an old map or brown paper and antique it with water color, chalk pastels or oil pastels.

5. Create directional signs(N,S,W,E) and glue down or draw on your compass rose. Cut out the compass and glue down on your antiqued paper.
