Introduction

You will be focusing on the pioneering Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa.

Her work was inspired by the beauty around her: spider webs, wings of insects, and drops of water found in the garden on the farm where she spent her childhood.

You will study biomorphic forms through pencil, ink, and watercolor. You will create three drawings and later in the month two individual paper sculptures.

Procedure

Watch the videos and study the examples.

 Create 3 different biomorphic drawings

• One: Use pencil to outline a biomorphic shape with in a shape, then fill in the center  with dark repetitive cursive marks. Repeat the process for the outer layer but only lighter in tone.

• Two: Choose three colors and watercolor 5 biomorphic shapes. Let dry. Using a sharpie, unify the colored shapes with organic and soft patterns.

• Three: Choose a seed pod from the examples and do a complete  detail drawing from your observation of the example.
