Testing the Addon
Testing is very important. Not only does it catch mistakes, it can point out glitches from unforeseen interactions, such as a texture looking right in 3D modeling tool but looking different in-game.
The general testing strategy I use:
Verify mesh, textures, and basic body movements look correct in the 3D modeling tool.
Compile the model for HLMV and verify mesh, textures, and animations in HLMV.
Compile the model for L4D2 and verify everything in-game via single-player and multiplayer campaign games.
