This is a 5th Grade Journal from the beginning of their current PBL.
Students researched the plant life cycle, hydroponics gardening & its lighting, and different types of hydroponics pods in order to determine which would yield more crops: traditional raised bed gardening or hydroponics.
Students are researching the use of potassium polyacrylate in garden beds. They were tasked with creating an informative superhero comic to share the benefits of potassium polyacrylate with people.
Math Standard: NF.1/NF.2
Students were tasked to find out how much potassium polyacrylate they would need to put in half of the garden bed.
First, they measured the sides of the half that would contain soil and polyacrylate. Second, the students needed to find the area. The instructions on the potassium polyacrylate said to use 1tbsp per square foot. Then after finding the square footage, students had to figure out how many tablespoons of potassium polyacrylate they would need. They also needed to decide if one pound would be enough. We gave them the conversion of 32 tbsp= 1 pound. After deciding that one pound would be enough, they needed to find out how much potassium polyacrylate would be left over.

This is the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning the students did. Students only did the claim portion and will be using the evidence collected (growth of cabbage) to determine their reasoning.
Reflection entry from Ms. Kathy Smart (GHC) coming to talk about potassium polyacrylate
Students had to create a light design for the city of Cartersville. The supplies needed that students had to budget for are also included. Students also had to replicate their designs in Minecraft and then vote for who had the best design.
Students were tasked with making a volcano explode using the correct ingredients. During their test day, students had a chance to retest if their volcano did not erupt. Once their volcano erupted, students had to measure the distance of their lava flow in inches and convert it to centimeters.
Students were tasked with making an educational model of cells using various materials.
