Excelling- STEM or STEAM students conduct investigative research to make claims, collect evidence, analyze data, and argue from evidence that connects to grade-level appropriate Georgia Standards. Student research is communicated to a public audience that includes business and community partners.
Kindergarten students have spent this semester investigating the garden and the strawberry plants they are caring for. They observed a variety of materials and organized them in different categories based on their characteristics. Using this knowledge, they designed and built baskets that could safely transport strawberries.
Students researched the needs of plants and animals through whole group reading. They read the nonfiction text What Do Plants and Animals Need to Survive? and created a class chart. They also drew a plant in an environment to meet all of its needs. They refer to this information while planning what they are planting for their spring sale.
2nd graders completed a jigsaw activity using an article that discussed the benifits of herbs for chickens. They shared their findings with each other, then as a class they talked about options for varying the chicken's diet. Students chose some of the herbs they would like to plant and test to see which the chickens prefer.
Students investigated different soil types and tested their water retention. They used this information when planting their garden beds for fall and spring.
Fourth grade students began their unit on predicting weather by observing clouds and their patterns to see if that could accurately predict the weather. They determined they could not and began researching other ways to predict weather and different tools. To conclude their investigation, students created weather forecasts in Canva.
5th grade researched the effects of potassium polyacrylate on a garden bed. First, they learned the other uses of potassium polyacrylate and how they might affect plant growth. They chose to divide the bed in half and plant lettuce on both sides. They only added the potassium polyacrylate to one side. They discovered that the side with potassium polyacrylate was growing much faster than the side without. Students also wondered if the potassium polyacrylate would damage the food or surrounding soil. They researched and them used the CER protocol to write a response.
Students used their research to create an informative comic strip that either promoted or impeded the use of potassium polyacrylate in gardens.
Each year, we grow a hydroponics garden in the winter months. Our harvest is served during lunches by our garden club. The club decides what will be planted and what they could be used for. They also monitor the pH balance of the water and nutrients as needed.
REAL WORLD PROBLEM: After a dirt plant was introduced on the bottom shelve we started having problems with aphids. Our theory is they hatched from the dirt originally.
SOLUTION: We researched and introduced ladybugs because they eat aphids but they kept flying away. We then treated the plants with Neem oil.
This year we will research what plants we can grow hydroponically that are resistant to aphids.
Each year our ESOL students focus in on attracting monarch butterflies to our garden. They have researched the migration patterns of the butterflies and what plants will attract them. Our butterfly garden is now a part of the Rosalind Carter Butterfly Trail!
