Students will plant and cultivate vegetables to support the Backpack Buddies program for students facing food insecurity over the summer. They determined that these students may not have the same access to fresh produce as others after talking with the guidance counselor. Through hands‑on gardening, research on sustainable growing practices, and community collaboration, they will work with Master Gardners to grow plants for these students to take home over the summer.  Students will collect data from Backpack Buddies students to determine which plants to grow.  They will consult the school counselor and review school/district free‑and‑reduced lunch data to understand local need.  

1st grade students planned and planted a Thanksgiving salad garden.   They are tracking plant height and how long it is taking to grow.  In the spring, they researched greenhouses and how they can be used to help plants produce quicker into the growing season.    They used that knowledge to create mini greenhouses and start edible plants that will be sold in our spring plant sale.
