Excelling- Learning occurs at the adaptation level. Classroom instruction is student centered, and students can think in complex ways and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired. When confronted with perplexing unknowns, students create solutions and take action that further develops their skills and knowledge to help their community. Community partners engage with students throughout the process.
Our teachers work daily towards the adaptation level of learning. Students are the focus of our work as a staff. Teachers are consistently working to give students opportunities to problem solve in the real world through science and math instruction.
Students explored the concept of sink and float through novel engineering. They read the beginning of Sheep in a Jeep and then had to devise a road the sheep could not sink into. We focused on the beginning, middle and ending of stories as well.
Students observed Google Earth images of the area surrounding our school in the year 2005 and the current year. As a class, they created a Venn diagram that compared the pictures and discussed why less land could affect agriculture in the area.
"Our 1st graders used a similar opening for their PBL to 5th grade. I was very impressed with the students' observations and connections! They noted the amount of grass and how that was less space to grow plants." -STEM Teacher
Students used Minecraft to create fraction ecosystems. They solved the fraction word problems them had to create a thriving ecosystem using them in Minecraft.
"Students created comics to teach younger grade levels about the possible uses and advantages of Potassium Polyacrylate in our gardens at WES. Students used a rubric to know what the required elements were, and many went above and beyond the expectations that were set!" -5th Grade Teacher
After researching the effects of potassium polyacrylate, 5th graders created persuasive comic strips to encourage others to try it out in the gardens. They used research and planned a storyboard in their journals. Then, they brought them to life using Storyboard That.
