Kindergarten will design and refresh the school’s sensory garden to deepen connections to nature using the five senses through this new yearlong PBL. The current sensory garden is used by the guidance counselor. She shared with kindergarten how it is something that can benefit all students. Partnering with Master Gardeners and the guidance counselor, students will research how the sense of touch can be represented, cultivate appropriate plants and rocks, and integrate learning from science, ELA, math, and environmental stewardship. The project culminates in a garden that is an accessible, sensory-rich space for learning and well‑being. Students will be able to track the number of visitors to the garden every month by asking them to place a small stone in a bucket as they leave. This will allow students to see if they are affecting change.
How can we use our five senses to design a garden for others to enjoy and learn about nature?
2024-2025
Kindergarten students planted carrots and researched carrot recipes. They created recipe cards to share, along with the carrots, with a local assisted living facility. In the spring semester, they are caring for strawberry plants and designing a basket that will keep the berries safe during transport.
Driving Question: How can we as producers utilize our school gardens to grow and produce and enrich the wellbeing of our elderly communities?
In the spring 2023, grade level teachers completed a PBL basket activity to plan their PBL for next school year. The planning activity included:
standards (at least two content areas)
community partners
driving questions
benchmarks within EDP
final product
After we finished our posters, the school conducted a gallery walk the following week to identify likes, wonders and recommendations.
