This is a 1st grade journal from the beginning of their current PBL. They are learning how to care for plants and how they can grow them in support of our school's Backpack Buddy program.
Students looked at google images of our area from today and 10 years ago. They noticed the changes and how there was less land to grow things. They discussed food scarcity and how it impacts them. Students researched green houses and made small versions. they planted them and them transplanted them into larger containers once they sprouted.
Students planned and planted a salad garden. They learned about the vegetables that go into salads and which grow best in cooler months. They used the 10 frames to decide how many plants to use and where they should be planted in the garden bed.
During the spring semester, the 1st grade worked to grow plants from seeds to sell for Mother's Day. They began by learning about how to forecast the weather with basic instruments to better care for the plants. Then they planted and while they grew, created advertisements for the sale to display around the school.
