Based on Google Earth images of the surrounding area, students are researching ways to promote a sustainable garden to meet rising produce needs in response to community growth. With the help of the UGA Extension Office, they are analyzing chemical and physical soil changes before and after planting. In winter, students will work with Lowe's and Pike Nursery, and use principles of electricity to optimize greenhouse heating. They will program micro:bits to monitor and compare temperature and create a dichotomous key to determine when heaters should run, with the goal of improving plant growth and productivity in the cooler months. This will increase yield for our annual plant sale.

In the fall semester, 5th graders researched potassium polyacrylate's super absorbent qualities. They split their garden bed into two sections - one with potassium polyacrylate and one without - to measure the growth of cabbage plants.

We stored up the dirt and poured the potassium in there. We planted the plant and covered them really good. We're watching for how it grows. The potassium polyacrylate helps it absorb water.
