After the county maintenance department required relocating the pollinator garden because it was too close to AC Units, 2nd grade launched a new PBL to design a habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Students will research pollinator needs, analyze current and past Pollinator Census data, observe local species, plant native flowers and habitats with support from Master Gardeners. They will monitor pollinators monthly and adapt the garden to support all life stages. Through their research, they will learn how necessary pollinators are for the school gardens to thrive.

Second Grade Scientists at Work!
Our second graders were buzzing with excitement this week as they took part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a citizen science project created by the University of Georgia. With clipboards in hand, they observed and counted pollinators like bees, butterflies, and beetles right in our school garden—just like real scientists!
This hands-on project gave students the chance to contribute valuable data toward understanding pollinator populations across the Southeast. Not only did they learn why pollinators are vital to food systems and ecosystems, but they also played a role in raising awareness and helping scientists track changes over time.
We’re so proud of our students for demonstrating curiosity, teamwork, and a love for nature. Way to go, second grade!

2nd grade students have been solving several problems related to our chickens. They have brainstormed enrichment activities to entertain the chickens. They have researched different types of food and water containers to prevent the chickens from kicking debris into their food and water sources. Additionally, they have been researching the best chicken coop layouts and materials so that the chickens have the best possible living environment for all seasons and weather conditions.
Students are measuring the size of the current coop. Thy are going to design a larger one during the spring semester.

Driving Question : How can we create a self-sustaining environment that would benefit our chickens?
During February, we incubated 9 chicken eggs. Students learned about what happens during the incubation period and how to care for eggs during this time. We candled the eggs and determined 1/9 was viable. The chick, Marshmallow, hatched in late February!
Katie Martin, from the UGA Extension office came to share about the life cycle of a chicken and what happens during the incubation phase.
Students researched different techniques to 'entertain' the chickens. They created their designs in their journals. Once they had their idea, they created a 3D model in Tinkercad and some of the designs were printed and put into the coop.
We are trying to keep the chickens inside the coop. We are trying to keep them entertained and, in the coop. We are making some toys or food and dust baths. We are going to 3D print our designs to keep them entertained.

Straw going into the chicken's food and water is a big area of concern. 2nd grade has been collaborating to create a design for a new system which will lessen or solve the problem of straw getting into the food and water.

After we finished our posters, the school conducted a gallery walk the following week to identify likes, wonders and recommendations.
