The breeze from the ocean was warm
It was comforting.
The night was riddled with bright, starry twilight
Low tides whispered from the ocean
Barely reaching our feet
It was quiet, pure silence
We sat there just watching, reminiscing
A calm for our high tides.
A new twilight in our family of stars
Life feels worth living
Until the ocean reformed the past
The high tides felt cold
The weight of a young star in my hands
Unknowing of the now
Unable to light up the dark night
It was a quick fleeting moment
These thoughts were going to be my last
A future for me and him felt…
Gone
Before I could even trace back
The ocean pulled me back
It felt warmer than it was
It enveloped me and my star
Saving me from the brutal tides
I think back to that night
The night I almost took away me and my star from the twilight
The ocean is now warm
The night bright again
A protector of the stars sits beside me
My star hangs in the sky beside me
Beneath the waves,
Jellyfish drift silently lighting the ocean
A pulsating sensation that still feels real
This is home.
My name is Andrea Nerio and I’m a 12th grader at CRJ. For this poem, the inspiration just came to me to write something bittersweet. The meaning of this poem is deep and is about coming back from loss and desperation. The person in this poem is someone who has gone through a lot, they are burdened by the task of carrying the “star” which in this case is a child. As a last restore they come to the ocean to bid goodbye to the world. However, “the ocean pulled me back” which is referring to someone saving the two. Whatever happens to them is up to the reader to decide, but the main character and the, now, grown up child comes back to the ocean. The character that saved them comes back to reminisce as well, and they look at the ocean. The “jellyfish” is a special character in this story. It represents any past lost or those who could who couldn’t make it to the end, and was now a part of the sea drifting away, still being remembered, but not on land (hope that makes sense..). The characters in this story can relate to anyone dealing with loss or having been saved. I’ve never done a poem with this much emotion, so it was pretty new to me. I really liked writing in this style, even though I've always had strong feelings about writing poetry, and might do it again, maybe.... I hope you really enjoyed it!
