The cold dew on the green grass
The stream flowing through the trees
As the little boy walks through,
His pants become wet and muddy
As he sits on the bank of the river,
Grey overtakes the sky
The small stream becomes a roaring river
The trees begin to dance with the water
The boy gets mesmerized by the dance
He’s consumed and has no control
He wants to let go,
yet it’s so addicting.
The same dance that took his father
The same dance that took his mother
At least now they’ll be dancing together,
in the biggest field.
Surrounded by thousands of flower
and the bright light of the sun.
I was inspired to write this story because addiction is something that has taken over many people’s lives and has been passed on from generations and has affected people that I know. While beginning to write this poem, it was easy to write about and show how addiction can take over somebody. It was easy to make something that would seem so peaceful have a deeper and darker meaning to it. By using imagery I was able to show how addiction is silent and can take over someone. I also used shift to show the timeline of someone’s addiction. In the beginning everything feels good, then everything begins to crash, and lastly you get to a point of no return and reach the end.
