Music has a strong effect on how people feel, especially young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. Many people use music to match their mood or change how they feel. Certain parts of music, such as tempo and mode, play an important role in forming emotions. Musical tempo and mode strongly shape the emotions of young adults ages 18–25, because faster tempos increase excitement and emotional energy, slower tempos encourage relaxation, and major or minor modes influence whether feelings are positive or negative. Understanding these musical features shows that the structure of music plays a powerful role in controlling how people respond with their emotions.
One major way that musical structure affects people's emotions is through tempo, or how fast a song is played. Research shows that faster tempos are linked with higher levels of emotional energy and excitement. In a study on NATURE, Minal Gowda said that “fast-tempo music is usually connected with excitement, liveliness, happiness, joy, and pleasure.” This shows that when music moves quickly, it usually makes listeners feel more energetic and alert. In another study published in PLOS ONE, Rosabel Yu Ling Tay found that faster tempos caused people to choose more high-arousal emotion words, which means the words are connected to strong and active feelings. These findings show that faster music can increase the intensity of emotions and excitement in young adults.
In contrast, slow tempos usually create calmer and more relaxed emotions. The same study from Gowda found that slow music increased brain activity linked to calming emotional states. This shows that slower music helps listeners feel peaceful or thoughtful. Ling Tay’s study also showed that slower music led participants to choose fewer high-arousal words, meaning they felt less emotional intensity. These results prove that slower tempos encourage relaxation and reduce excitement. This is why many people choose slower music when they want to rest, study, or calm down after a stressful day.
Another important feature of music that shapes emotion is mode, which refers to whether a song is in a major or minor key. According to a study published in the National High School Journal of Science by Zengyao Yang, melodies in major mode were often described as “happy and net positive,” while minor mode melodies were most commonly linked to negative emotions like fear. This shows that the key of a song can change how it feels emotionally. Major keys often sound bright and cheerful, while minor keys sound darker or sadder. Because of this, the mode strongly influences whether listeners experience positive or negative emotions when hearing a piece of music.
In conclusion, tempo and mode are powerful parts of music that shape how young adults emotionally respond to music. Faster tempos increase excitement and energy, slower tempos encourage calmness and relaxation, and major or minor modes affect whether emotions feel positive or negative. These research studies proved that music is not just a random sound. Instead, it carefully affects the way listeners feel. Understanding tempo and mode helps explain why music plays such an important role in emotions for young adults.
What inspired me to choose this topic was how tempo and musical mode can change emotions, and why certain songs make people feel happy, calm, or sad. Music is something most people listen to every day, and it can have a strong effect on how we feel. This topic is also important because it can be useful in real life, such as helping people reduce stress, improve their mood, or stay focused while studying. I connected my personal experience to my research by thinking about the different types of music I listen to and how their beats, speed, and tone affect my emotions. The part of my research I enjoyed the most was learning about the connection between music and psychology. It was interesting to discover that even small changes in music can affect how people feel. The most challenging part of this project was finding articles on the specific topic I was researching and understanding difficult scientific terms in research articles and putting that information into my own words. However, working through those challenges helped me improve both my research and writing skills. Through this research, I learned many new things about how music affects emotions. One thing I learned is that tempo, or the speed of music, can change how energetic or calm someone feels. Faster music often makes people feel more excited or energized, while slower music usually helps people feel relaxed and peaceful. I also learned that musical mode plays an important role. Music in a major key often creates happier and more positive feelings, while music in a minor key can create deeper, stronger, or more serious emotions. Another important discovery was that tempo and mode affect emotions differently. Tempo mainly changes emotional energy, while mode affects whether those emotions feel positive or negative. In conclusion, this project helped me better understand the strong connection between music and emotions. It showed me that simple elements like tempo and mode can really influence how people feel, and it helped me see why music is such an important part of people’s everyday lives.
