Drifting away from you leaves me in your music
In all kinds calming, rock, rap, r&b you pick
Each rhyme
rhythm
beat if you just listen closely
you can feel me through it leaving you less lonely
You’ll find me in the glow of Halloween nights,
in autumn’s breeze and its soft delights.
The cozy weather, familiar and near,
will whisper my presence, quiet and clear.
Dri f t i n g away from you, you’ll find me in others’ laughter
Those who think everything is funny–the people decreasing your anxiety
Those who you have friendly banter with-no hard feelings after
There will be signs of my love in society
For I love you too much to not be with you after I’m gone
You taught me what's wrong and what to waste my time on
Based on that and the values I learned along the way…
my love will guide you, even when I fade away.
Drifting Into Memory is inspired by real life experiences of losing someone close to you. This could be through death or just by falling out with a person. The ache of nostalgia mixed with sadness is what is left and felt through the things that remind you of them most. Many of the images in the poem come from things I personally associate with comfort memory, such as music, Halloween nights, and autumn weather. Because my birthday is in October, I felt extremely close to the coziness of fall and music, especially R&B which becomes a place where memory lives on me. As for the line that states “You taught me what's wrong and what to waste my time on/Based on that and the values I learned along the way…” I believe that I learn something from everyone. I don’t have regrets. I believe everything happens for a reason and that there are lessons in every problem I have within myself, some else, or external issues. My writing process took place late at night in my room, when emotions feel most honest and uninterrupted. Many people have different ways of processing scenarios or issues. My way of doing this is by writing a lot of poetry because, like in this case, it has no structure which lets emotions guide the pacing, spacing and repetition. My favorite literary devices that I incorporated into this piece were shifts in writing and imagery. It helps readers feel the words I say through their imagination of how it feels to be in my position but as well as seeing it on paper with the shifts that I incorporated. The main themes are loss, memory, love and growth. Rather than portraying loss as only painful, I explore it as something that transforms into guidance, comfort, and remembrance. The poem suggests that love does not disappear, but rather changes its form into existence in everyday moments. I am a young writer who uses poetry as a way to process emotion, memory, and personal growth, often drawing inspiration from music and personal experiences. I want youth to take inspiration from my writing and write as well or at least help them understand that they aren’t alone.
