I’ve always loved coffee,
The bittersweet taste,
The lingering warmth,
The sweet smell.
It’s always been a staple in my life,
Every morning since I was young,
Throughout the day in my teens,
It’s always been there as a comfort drink.
But I never thought I could love coffee as much as I do now.
It’s a small detail,
But every time he brings me coffee,
I love it a little more.
Whether it’s the coffee or him, I can’t quite say,
All I know is that as the days get colder,
I still have a steady warmth and sweetness in my life.
Coffee has always been my favorite drink. Ever since my great-grandma let me try it when I was 2, it’s been a constant thing in my life. It’s always intertwined with multiple aspects in my life, whether it be memories of my grandma, semi-stressful mornings, a sweet treat throughout the day, or a caffeine boost on a bad day; it’s always been there for me as a constant reminder that everything will turn out fine in the end.
Poetry is one of my favorite genres of writing, so writing this poem was like second nature to me, especially with it being based on such a recent addition to my life. I chose to write this poem based on repetition and symbolism, choosing to emphasize how a familiar habit can switch to something completely different and special with just a handful of interactions from a loved one.
The themes I chose to explore within my writing were comfort, familiarity, and love. How affection can unfold in such familiar ways, and how it can bring a new point of view to things that you thought would never change.
