Workplace safety is one of the most important factors to consider, especially in construction. Workers deal with dangerous conditions, heavy machinery and bipolar weather since every day the weather changes. They are around tall buildings, big equipment and power tools which makes accidents a real easy target to happen. That's why the Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets safety rules for companies to follow. For example, “Safety is about practicing emergency drills, having clear plans for problems that could prevent injuries and making teaching factors about what to do in case of evacuation”. Eventually good safety practice doesn’t just stop incidents from happening but it makes a safer workplace & makes sure the right precautions are in place to protect the people.
If an employee has an accident on the job, it’s not only the employee who suffers, but the whole company as well. In addition to the damage to the employee, accidents can be very stressful, time-consuming, and very costly. The company would have to pay the employee’s medical bills, time, and workers compensation, which can be very expensive. If the employee’s injury was severe, the employee could even be fined or taken to court. But that’s not all, because if one person has an accident, everyone else will be worried about themselves too.
Accidents can also affect the way a business operates. If an individual is unable to work, other workers might have to do more work, which could affect the rate of work. Equipment could be destroyed, which would need to be fixed. Other companies could even be driven out of business if people think that the business is not a safe place to work. If workers do not feel that they are safe, it can affect their morale, causing them to look for another job. This is why safety is such a big issue in every kind of work, whether it is an office or a manufacturing business.
According to Cokinos the first thing a company usually does after someone is injured is to make sure the person receives medical attention as quickly as possible. Once the situation is brought under control, the next thing the company does is to find out why the injury happened. Companies do this so they can prevent the injury from happening again. First, they usually try to get information by talking to people who witnessed the injury and examining any safety rules they had.
“The idea isn’t to blame anyone, but to determine the actual reason why the accident occurred”. For instance, if a worker slips and falls, the first thing that comes to mind might be, “well, they weren’t paying attention to where they were walking.” But the actual reason might be that there was no “wet floor” sign or the lighting was not giving. Once the cause is clear, the company will come up with ways to prevent it from happening again. That might mean updating training programs, replacing or repairing equipment, or changing safety rules. Sometimes they also hold safety meetings to go over what happened and make sure everyone understands how to avoid the same problem in the future.
Investigating the whole situation after an injury is not only about compliance, it is also about safety, safety for everyone involved. If workers understand that their employer is taking accidents seriously and is committed to improving the situation, this instills loyalty in the employees. This is because workers are more likely to report accidents or near-miss incidents before they actually become injured. In the end, employers who prioritize safety save money and time in the future because fewer accidents occur, and their employees are happier. Each accident is an opportunity to learn something valuable from the situation. This is how a safe, prepared, and confident workforce is built (OSHA).
For example, when you work for a good company, there are a lot of benefits that go beyond just getting a paycheck. One of the biggest benefits is the feeling of safety. When a company really cares about safety, it is a sign they also care about you as a person, not just as a worker. You do not have to be worried about getting hurt on the job or working with broken equipment. The knowledge that your job is looking out for you makes it much easier for you to do your best. It also “makes everyone feel more comfortable and confident about their work environment” according to LeDonne.
If, of course, the person gets hurt, a good company doesn’t turn a blind eye to the situation; they assist the person in need. Most companies have workers comp, which pays the bills, so the employee isn’t out anything if they get hurt on the job (LeDonne). Some companies even call to see how the person’s doing or assist the person in getting back to work as soon as the person has recovered from the injury. This shows the person that the company cares not only about the job getting done but also about the person’s health, which makes the employee feel like a valued person, especially if the person is going through a tough time.
Another great advantage is the way that companies assist their employees with their growth. Many companies provide their employees with the opportunity to learn new things or acquire new skills. For instance, an employee may be working in a warehouse and have the opportunity to learn to be a supervisor, or someone may be working in a customer service role and have the opportunity to learn to be a manager. It is good to know that the job may lead to more than the same thing forever, and learning new things helps to keep the job interesting and provide a reason to stay motivated.
A whole bunch of companies also offer benefits that make your life outside the office easier. These can include things like health insurance, taking time off, and/or having a plan for your retirement (LeDonne). These might sound pretty dull at first, but they're really important. Having health insurance means you can get medical treatment without worrying about money. Having time off means you can take a break or spend time with your family without losing your paycheck. Having a plan for your retirement makes people feel secure about the future. On top of all that, businesses that actually care about their employees tend to have good communication and teamwork skills. When people are appreciated and feel safe, they’re more willing to contribute their thoughts and help each other out, and do their jobs well. It’s a great vibe where everyone wants to do well because if they do well, the business does well too!
Overall, a company that has a positive relationship with its employees, showing respect and support, is a workplace that people actually want to be a part of. Feeling safe, supported, and having the opportunity to grow as a person makes a huge difference. It’s not just about making money; it’s about feeling like we matter as a person. If we, as employees, are happy, healthy, and respected, we will give our best effort, and that’s good for everyone.
Now let's think, why am I talking about construction safety and how do I know all this?
I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was sitting in my classroom, not really thinking or worrying about anything serious, when my phone started ringing. It was my mom calling me. I was tempted not to pick up the phone because I was not supposed to have my phone on during school hours, but something inside me was urging me to pick up the phone anyway. When I picked up the phone, all I could hear was my mom crying on the other end of the line. She was not able to speak very well, but when she finally managed to speak, she told me that my dad was involved in a very bad accident at work and that he was on the point of death. I was shocked, and I did not know what to say to my mom; all I could do was freeze.
When I got home, everything seemed different. The house was quiet, but it wasn’t peaceful. It felt heavy. My mom was still crying. We were waiting for news from the hospital. My dad works in construction. That day, he had gotten hit by an excavator. The doctors said his injuries were quite serious. His pelvis had been damaged quite badly. He had to get surgery right away. They didn’t know if he would even survive the night. Hearing this made me feel helpless. The days that followed were all a blur for me. My mom was always by dad’s side, and I tried to lend a helping hand at home as much as I could. School was not really relevant anymore, as nothing seemed to make any sense to me. All I could think about was dad, lying there, struggling for his life. He ended up staying in the hospital for nine long months. We had some tough times during that period, as there were days when I didn’t know if I was going to eat, or nights when I didn’t sleep, praying for the good times to return.
My dad had to go through two surgeries to fix his pelvis, and after that, he still couldn’t walk for quite some time. Once my dad finally came out of the hospital, he had to go through rehab for over a year. It was really hard watching my dad go through all this pain, but at the same time, it was really great to see that despite going through so much pain, my dad never gave up. Every little step that my dad took was like a miracle to me, and the hard work that my dad put into his recovery really taught me a lot about never giving up, no matter how impossible things may seem. These two years were the toughest of my life. Everything seemed so unsure, and our family had to go through a lot of pain. Yet through all this pain, we continued praying and holding on to our hopes. And thank God, my dad is still alive. He is still with us today, and I am thankful for this. Although what happened changed us forever, it also made us stronger. I learned not to take my life for granted, to appreciate my family, and to be thankful for every single day I get to spend with the people I love.
After all that had happened, dad was able to go back to work, not the same way as before, but in another way. Because of all that he had learned, all that he had gone through, the company gave him a great opportunity. He is now a superintendent for a construction company. He does not have to work hard anymore, physically, that is. He runs the construction sites, manages the people, makes sure everything is going the way it should, and even has some clients, important ones, and has managed to build great relationships with people of high value.
It is like a full-circle moment to see him in his current position. After all the pain, fear, and uncertainty he went through, he has come back even stronger. It is really inspiring to see him go through all that he has gone through to come back to a position where he is not only safe but also ensures that his team is safe. Every time I see him working or hear him talk about his projects, it makes me proud. It reminds me that no matter how bad things get, there is always a chance that something good will come out of it. What my family went through taught me a lot about faith, hard work, and never giving up. My dad’s story taught me that no matter how hard life gets, there is always a way to get back up, and in some cases, even better than before.
Reflecting on all that my family has gone through, I have realized the importance of construction safety. My dad’s accident was a reality check that one single mistake or one single unsafe situation on the job site can alter the whole life of a family forever. Nobody should have to go through what my dad went through or what my family went through watching him struggle to survive. Safety procedures and training may seem boring or unnecessary sometimes, but they do save lives. Everyone deserves to go home safely after a day’s work on the job site. Having gone through what my dad went through, I have come to understand that safety is not only about following procedures but also about saving families and their futures.
Now that my dad is back on his feet, working, I realize the importance of safety more than ever. He’s a superintendent, which means he’s in charge of his workers, making sure they know the job, are careful, and get the proper protection needed to do the job without harm. He always says to his workers, “No job is worth getting hurt over.” I realize that, seeing the experience he went through, but I also see the positive change he’s made out of it, which inspires me to do the same.
In conclusion, construction safety isn’t just a rule, it’s a responsibility, and every person, whether a worker, a superintendent, or a company, has a part to play in the safety of the work site. If more people took it seriously, fewer families would have to go through the ordeal we did. My dad’s experience has taught me that life can change in an instant, but it’s also taught me the value of faith, strength, and second chances. I won’t forget the experience we went through, but I will be forever grateful that he’s still here, that his experience can be a reminder to everyone of the importance of putting safety first.

I decided to write an essay on construction safety for personal reasons since it had a major impact on my life as well. My father’s workplace accident has made me realize the importance of safety, personally and in relation to the entire family in such a dramatic and pretty serious situation. During my investigation, I realized that all the information gathered and researched was related to my personal experiences which I was trying to incorporate into my essay. Sources used in order to complete the paper included such as Osha and other articles which explain in detail about the causes of work-related accidents and how they could be prevented in order to avoid any risks. It was interesting to connect personal experiences with the researched data, although it wasn’t easy to maintain balance between the two sides.
