I grew up listening to a lot of Spanish Music like Reggaeton, Cumbias, Rock/Alternative, and Latin. I was born in Galveston Texas but was raised in Houston Texas, both of my parents emigrated from San Luis Potosi which is in Mexico. They came here to the States so they could give us a life that they wanted their daughters to have. I used to live in a household with all my sisters so we always had a full house of 6 people and that's including me. My family and I love music so much that we always put it on whenever we have the chance, especially cook out or parties.
The song “Abusadora” by Wisin & Yandel brings me back to such a nostalgic time when my sisters were old enough to go out and go party and this song would always come up as they got ready and I would just watch how they got ready while I talked to them and asked where they would go. Reggaeton was such a big thing back then and it still is till this day, a lot of hispanic artists wanted to get big with music and to their surprise they were good at producing music that everyone enjoyed and got them feeling excited.
The song “Cumbia Caliente” by Fito Olivares Y su Grupo reminds me of the time I would go to my tio’s house for parties and they loved Cumbias so much and they still do but they would always play these catchy song that would make me want to dance with my mom and these cumbia songs would be present at every party I would go to with my family because people love dancing to cumbias it could be like in quinceaneras, wedding, cook outs, and birthday parties. Fito Olivares Y su Grupo were such a big deal back then because of their catchy songs but unfortunately Fito Olivares did pass away but his group are still continuing his legacy to cherish each moment with each other.
The song “Tren al Sur” by Los Prisioneros takes me back to a time where the music of my eldest sister surrounded me with. I thought she was the coolest person I could ever meet because she would always go out and while getting ready she would listen to Spanish rock music and she loved shows and she would always go to these types of concerts where she would discover music, places, and people. Spanish rock has existed for nearly 70 years, originating in the mid 1950’s with translated covers of american rock and roll hits. It evolved from early imitators into a distinct genre across Spain and Latin America, gaining major business in the 1960s and exploding in popularity during the 1980s.
The song “En el Muelle de San Blas” has been one of the most favorite songs of all time and I can gladly say that I grew up listening to this song all the time with my parents especially on road trips where it was just all 6 of us again going to Florida or Colorado. Mana was a very famous Spanish rock band that was very popular. This band was friends in 1986 so it was peak era for them widely considered the most successful latin american band of all time. They have sold over 40-45 million records worldwide .
Last but not least the song “Adolescente y Bonita” By Pegasso was one of the favorite songs that my family always played when we were little, this song was very meaningful because growing up in a family with just one Dad and he has 4 daughters which he always play for us because he wanted us to feel pretty. I feel like this song belongs to my mom because it reminds me of her whenever my Dad would first dedicate this song to her which made her feel loved and happy. I actually got the group Pegasso at a festival and it was a dream come true. This band was formed in 1979 which they got considered cumbia pegassera style, and gained so much popularity in the early 1980.
What inspired me to write this piece was my family and friends and the music that they played. Music is such a big thing for me and I always have it with me no matter what. One of the first songs “Abusadora” is a very memorable song because my sisters grew up listening to that song and it s very catchy song. More like a club/dancing song that you could vibe with your friends. Between this playlist of mine I can show these moods of mine that express how much the song means to me. I learned from this piece that music can have such a deep connection with one human, and its not the song itself it is the memories and the song together that make it such a emotional song for me.
